It has been less than two weeks since Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2014 S-Class at an event in Germany and the car has already arrived in China. The car has been spied by the team at CarnewsChina is the S500 variant and was spotted still in its cargo pallet at the Tianjin Binhai International Airport. The report suggests that Chinese S-Class will make its debut at the 2013 Chengdu Auto Show.
The S500 is the top-of-the-line petrol variant. It is powered a 4.7-litre V8 mill that produces 455PS and 700Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 7G-Tronic Plus gearbox. China is expected to get all the other petrol variants but only in long wheelbase version. As is the case across the world, the new S-Class will compete with the BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 and the Jaguar XJ and in the Chinese market is currently in second place behind the A8.
China is one of the fastest growing car markets of the new decade. The sales numbers run in millions and pretty much even dwarfs American market. It is currently a hot bed for every major manufacturer to showcase their latest wares and is pretty good reason why we are seeing the new car here just a few days after its global debut.
For us more humble people in India, the new S-Class is expected to make its debut here by the end of the year and will go on sale in early 2014. Since we are one of the facilities of the German carmaker that assembles the S-Class we can expect to get all engine options and body styles when the car is launched.
