Urban crossovers are taking the global automotive market by storm and the Japanese giant, Honda, has entered the fray already. The production spec Honda Vezel, previously expected to be named CR-U, has been unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show to take the fight back to the EcoSports and the Dusters and the XUV500s. The Vezel is expected to go on sale in Japan by December 20 and shall gradually make its way to other markets across the globe.
The Japan-spec Vezel will be sold in petrol as well as hybrid models. The petrol engine is probably the same 1.5 i-VTEC that we get for the Honda City in India. Though there is no mention of a diesel engine as of now, we expect it to house the 1.5 i-DTEC motor from the Amaze when it comes to India.
Honda claims that the Vezel will feel like driving a coupe and we would rather agree to it after seeing it carrying the sloping roof-line of its bigger sibling, the CR-V. The rear door handles have been masked with the window sill and the C-pillar, like we have seen in the Chevrolet Beat, to give it a two-door coupe feel. Based on the Honda Fit/Jazz platform, the Vezel will be available in both 2WD and 4WD layouts.
Now that Honda is launching the diesel version of the City in a few days and the rumours of a diesel CR-V doing rounds, the Indian buyer can expect to have a glimpse of the India specific model at the Delhi Auto Show in February.
