Normally, when you hear the words LPG powered car, the first image that will form in your mind is a small hatchback or in the case of the Indian market, an Auto rickshaw. Now, however, the preconceived notion that running on LPG is ‘cheap’ will change thanks to a European tuning firm Startech who have introduced an LPG version of Range Rover’s baby SUV.
Developed in collaboration with Prins, a Dutch firm specialised in alternative fuel systems, the LPG powered Evoque uses 2.0-litre four-cylinder mill that produces 241PS and 340Nm of torque. LPG is delivered to the engine via an autogas system from a 74-litre tank. Once the LPG is depleted, the engine switches over to the petrol tank of the car. The company claims that the LPG system reduces emissions by 15 per cent and fuel costs by 50 per cent, however, the exact number have not been revealed.
The rest of the car is pretty much the same as the standard vehicle with the addition of a special body kit and by the look of it 21-inch wheels. It has been painted in a dual tone combination of lavender and dark blue.
We like the fact that the company has chosen the Evoque, a symbol of modern luxury, to fit the LPG kit. In times of volatile fuel prices this is a situation where you can have your cake (Evoque) and eat it (drive around without a pinch on the pocket). We have discovered that Startech has a dealer in India and that means there is actually a chance that such a product might be on offer a few months from now for all those who own an Evoque in the country.
