Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off its CL-Class successor at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. It has been dubbed as a top of the line model and is a worthy display of what we can expect from the three-pointed Star’s flagship model in the future.
Taking the concept of form is beauty, the S-Class Coupe shares many of the design cues that we saw on the CLA sedan when it was unveiled in March. The fascia gets the new headlight design that we saw on the 2014 S-Class but in place of the three tiered grille, Mercedes has fitted the floating dots unit from the MFA platform vehicles. It also gets an aggressive bumper and sharp lines on the bonnet all of which we believe are there more for the aerodynamics than the looks.
The Coupe gets a similar design as its four-door sibling but once again with sharper lines, flared wheels arches and a much lower roofline. The rear looks like a cross between the 2014 S-Class and the significantly more powerful SLS AMG. However, the chrome diffuser combined with the dual exhausts give the car a very premium feel and look. It is 5.1 meters long, 2 meters wide and 1.4 meters high making it something that you will not miss whatever be the case.
When you step inside, the S-Class Coupe envelops you and three other people in a cocoon of white leather, aluminium and silk. Much like the S-Class, there are no gauges or big buttons to press as the dash and the place where the instrument console should be are now two large 12.3-inchtouch screens. It gets an aqua colour interior ambient light. The engine powering this car is believed to be a 4.7-litre biturbo V8 that produces 457PS and 700Nm of torque. The Coupe is expected to be a RWD and will do this through the ZF eight-speed transmission.
In terms of features, the car has been with the German automaker’s Magic Body Control suspension and something new called ‘Intelligent Drive’ technology which basically comprises two stereo cameras that are able to provide a 3D view of the surrounding for the next 50 meters.
We believe that the production version of the car, slated for unveiling at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show, will be less extreme but still loaded with just as much technology. It is likely that Mercedes-Benz will soon replace its top variants with various models based on the S-Class platform. Since we get the CLS-Class in India, we expect that Mercedes-Benz will bring the S-Class Coupe to India as and when it launches the car.
