BMW has showcased a base variant of the 3-Seires, the 320i, at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. This car is essentially a cut-down version of the top of the line 328i Sport Line model and is around 3000 USD (Rs 1.86 lakh) cheaper than the 328i.
The American spec 320i will be powered by a twin turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 180bhp and 271Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic.
On the outside, the car will look the same as its more expensive twin expect for smaller alloy wheels. The US spec 320i will be offered with its patented iDrive system, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, rear-view camera, Xenon headlights, moonroof and split folding rear seats. It will also be offered with various optional packages like the sport package, cold weather package, premium package, driver assist and lighting package. Buyers will also get the option of choosing from artificial or Dakota leather for the upholstery.
The Indian spec version will be far more Spartan than its American cousin. Changes to our model are expected to include smaller infotainment display, omission of moonroof and reversing camera as well as artificial leather for the upholstery in a bid to keep the price down.
The engine for the India spec 320i is likely to be exactly the same as the American model except for the six-speed manual and the Xenon headlights. The US spec 320i has been priced at 33.445 USD (Rs 18.33 lakh before taxes and packages). The Indian 320i is expected to cost significantly lesser than 328i but no official announcement has been made as yet in this regard.
