Mclaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian grand prix on Sunday ahead of the Lotus Renault duo of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean.
Hamilton held the lead of the race from the lights to the finish despite a hard charging Kimi Raikkonen who was just a second behind him on the last lap after rising from fifth to second. The iceman displayed his raw talent after pulling an audacious overtaking move on his team mate. This is Hamilton’s 18th career victory and second of the season.
Behind the Lotus duo, world champion Sebastian Vettel despite driving effectively what could be termed ‘qualifying laps’, finished in fourth place. Birthday boy Fernando Alonso finished in fifth place followed by Jenson Button in the second Mclaren Mercedes who claimed sixth.
Bruno Senna in the Williams-Renault finished seventh, ahead of Redbull-Renault’s Mark Webber in eighth, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in ninth. Nico Rosberg, the lone surviving AMG Mercedes GP car finished in the final points paying position after team mate Micheal Schumacher retired from 18th place, having undertaken a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pitlane. Narain Karthikeyan was the only other driver to retire during the weekend – suspension failure.
Neither Force India nor Sauber cars managed to earn points this weekend, when tyre strategies didn’t count much. Going into the traditional summer break, Fernando Alonso now leads the championship with 164 points – 40 more than second place Mark Webber and 42 more than the defending champion. Red Bull still holds the lead in constructors’ title at 246 points, while McLaren, Lotus and Ferrari just five points adrift from 2nd to 4th with 193, 192 and 189 points respectively. The racing will once again resume at the start of September in Europe before heading to Asia and America towards the end.
