The Punto is a very important model for Fiat in Europe, and as such it offers the best Fiat can at the price. The 2012 model has been launched, and it offers a styling update, new paint shades, and new colours and materials on the inside. All models now get daytime running lamps, and the Blue&Me Bluetooth system is an option on all models as well.
The really interesting bit is that about the engines: the TwinAir Turbo engine makes its debut in the Punto, which claims to have the performance of a four-cylinder engine but the fuel economy of a twin-cylinder engine. It produces 85bhp and 145Nm, and an ‘Eco’ button on the dash reduces torque output to 110Nm for better fuel efficiency. There is also a pair of 1.4-litre petrol engines with MultiAir technology, with power outputs of 105bhp and 135bhp – the latter, with the help of a turbocharger. It reaches 100kmph in just 8.5 seconds.
The familiar MultiJet engine produces either 85bhp or 75bhp, with the help of a variable vane or fixed geometry turbocharger. They feature an intelligent alternator that recharges the battery only when there is no load on the engine, and a Start/Stop system. The common-rail injection system also has been upgraded, with up to eight injections possible per cycle. The 85bhp variant has a very impressive 200Nm of torque as a result of all this.
