The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross has been launched in India for Rs 8.34 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). There are eight variants of the Indo-Japanese automaker’s new crossover and powered by two different diesel engines. We have taken apart the variants to give you an idea of the best value proposition that the Indo-Japanese automaker has to offer in terms of this vehicle.
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Alpha DDiS 200/ Alpha DDiS 320 (Rs 10.75 lakh/Rs 13.74 lakh)
This is the top-spec variant of the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. It gets steering mounted audio and calling controls, height adjustment for the driver’s seat, touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity, rear wiper with demister, auto folding ORVMs, climate control, ABS and leather seats. This trim level also has HID headlamps, LED DRLs and an auto dimming IRVM.
While the feature list is quite comprehensive, it loses out on ESP and only gets two airbags when compared to Hyundai Creta’s six airbags. The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Alpha variant is priced Rs 14,000 more than the Hyundai Creta SX (o) but stills offers lesser features than the latter. It does not seem like that great value for money.
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Zeta DDiS 200/ Zeta DDiS 320 (Rs 9.99 lakh/Rs 12.99 lakh)
The Zeta variants are the second highest variants in the S-Cross range and are priced Rs 76,000 and Rs 75,000 lesser than their Alpha counterparts. The difference in the special features in this variant as compared to the Alpha variant is minimal. At this price range you lose out on the leather trim package, rain sensing wipers, HID headlamps, LED DRLs and auto dimming IRVMs (320 DDiS only) across both models and the auto climate control system in the DDiS 320- powered version. This does not decrease its value as you still do get a lot of features for this kind of money.
We suspect that the company expects most of its sales to come from the DDiS 200 version of this trim level and has hence kept more features for this version rather than the DDiS 320-spec model.
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Delta DDiS 200/ Delta DDiS 320 (Rs 9.15 lakh/Rs 11.99 lakh)
The Delta variants are priced Rs 84,000 (DDiS 200) and Rs 1 lakh (DDiS 320) lesser than the Zeta variants. This is a significant reduction in price across both engine options and this cost cutting measure is evident in the reduction of the features. On the outside, the cars lose out on the alloy wheels, front fog lamps and the rear wipers and washer system.
In the cabin, the infotainment system has been replaced by a CD player with a remote control, manual AC, fabric trim for the seats, but it gets no dead pedal (DDiS 320 only) or height adjustment for the driver’s seat. Maruti Suzuki has also removed the 12V socket in the boot as well as the button and cruise control.
This is the lowest spec DDiS 320 engined model on offer. The additional Rs 16,000 in the prices for the DDiS 320 is for the cost of the imported drivetrain which becomes a significant factor in this price bracket.
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Sigma DDiS200 (Rs 8.34 lakh)
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Sigma DDiS200 variant is Rs 84,000 lesser than the equivalent of the Delta variant. The most significant removal in addition to what is missing from the Delta variants is that there is no music system. We believe that the price they have put is far lower that what they could have done.
It has been priced in this manner to undercut its closest rivals the Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano by a significant margin in the base segment. We believe that this variant will be popular with those looking for a ‘large vehicle’ but light on the pocket.
We believe that the Zeta variant is the best value for money among the variants being offered for the S-Cross as you get most of the Alpha’s features but at a significantly reduced price.
