The Indian car market is expected to go bananas in 2016. There will be a slew of new entrants into the fray. We have put together this list of sedans across segments that will drive on to our roads next year. Right from the compact sedans all way to one crore plus flagship luxury models, India is set for some pretty exciting stuff next year!
Tata Sway
Is the new compact sedan from Tata Motors and will be offered with the same engines, feature list and design as the Zica but with the advantage of a boot. It will be the first A-segment compact sedan in the Indian market.
Volkswagen Polo Compact sedan
A new segment for Volkswagen to venture into with the Polo, this compact sedan will have all the design elements, underpinnings and bits from the hatchback. It will be longer and if we are to go by VWs design philosophy understated but still quite good looking.
Toyota Vios
Spyshots and test cars over the last two years seem to tell us that Toyota may finally get the Vios to India. It is likely to be their C-segment competitor and will slot in above the Etios sedan. Expect prices of Rs 7 lakh to Rs 13 lakh.
New Chevrolet Cruze
The Indian D-segment is not everyone’s cuppa tea but there seems to be no harm in trying anyway. The Cruze was unveiled in its latest guise earlier this year and now gets some added funkiness. Expect local production and a slight price hike.
2016 Hyundai Elantra
Hyundai’s D-segment car gets a makeover and is now larger and wider. Some of the highlights include a revised interior, touchscreen infotainment system and added safety features. On the engine and mechanical front, expect the same engines but now with a 7-speed CVT.
New Skoda Superb
The Czech automaker flagship sedan will now enter its third generation in India. Derived from the Vision-C concept, this car will debut by the middle of next year and gets a new interior and feature list. Expect petrol and diesel engine options for India.
2017 Honda Accord
We were saddened when Honda discontinued its flagship sedan in India in 2013. However, this was only a build up to the launch of a new car that for the first time will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines.
Next generation Volkswagen Passat
It was unveiled more than a year ago but will only come to India now . Petrol and diesel engine options will be standard as will also be a lot of cabin goodies. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 23 lakh to Rs 32 lakh .
Jaguar XE
Jaguar has finally ventured into the mid-level luxury car segment with the XE. It gets new four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, delicious cabin design that Jaguar is known for and of course a CKD entry which means a competitive price.
BMW 3 Series
We saw the last one in mid-2012 and now BMW has once again revised the 3 Series. There are some minor cosmetic updates, a new infotainment package as well as a base petrol engine which may now come to India considering the Delhi ban on diesel cars.
Toyota Prius
The world’s most famous ecobox has entered a new generation. There is loads of new technology and some better design but other than that the formula is the same. It will be brought in via the CBU route and will be on display at Toyota’s stall at the 2016 Auto Expo.
Jaguar XF
The car that started it all in the modern context for JLR is now out with some minor cosmetic updates and engines. It is already assembled locally so we can expect this 2017 model to leap its way here with some amount of fanfare.
Volvo S90
Volvo will launch a new 5 Series, E-Class rival called the S90. It replaces the S80 globally and comes with a variety of petrol and diesel engine options. What we like the most is the design, interior bits and of course those ‘Thor hammer’ headlights!
BMW 7 Series
The longest BMW has now got longer, more geeky on the tech front but still maintains its understated German looks. It will launch at the 2016 Auto Expo and is likely to be offered in the 730Ld and 750Li guise. The 760Li is likely to come as a Mercedes Maybach rival late next year.
Jaguar XJ facelift
The flagship sedan from Solihull gets some new bumpers and lots of new stuff inside but other than that it carries on the fine idea of blending British luxury with modern design. Local assembly will happen for the base petrol and diesel models.
