The Fiat 500X B-segment crossover has been teased in an official video ahead of its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The latest addition to the Fiat 500 family, it will share much of its underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade and is expected to be sold alongside its American sibling in many markets. The crossover has already been spotted testing on multiple occasions across Europe in full camouflage.
The video shows a red screen behind which the Fiat 500X is pressed up and outlined using a white stream of light. This outline reveals that the Fiat 500X will share much of its external appearance with the Fiat 500L including the fascia and the rear end (in terms of layout of elements). However, the Fiat 500X will differ from its other siblings when it comes to the stance and roofline which in this case is a forward leaning stance and a flowing roofline towards the rear. The windshield is sharply raked and the wheel arches are flared to give the crossover a squat stance.
Apart from the outline, we already know that the 500X will get the same funky and ‘beautiful in the typical Italian way’ interiors as the other 500- badged models. It will share its engine and gearbox line up with the Renegade which means the petrol units will be the 1.4-litre Multiair unit and the 2.4-litre Tigershark engine from Jeep. The diesel engines are expected to be the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre Multijet diesel units. The cars are expected to get six-speed manuals as well a nine-speed AT box.
Will we get to see the Fiat 500X in India? At present it looks unlikely as this will be a premium five-seater to rival vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke and the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross of which only the third car is coming to India and will be the first vehicle of its kind to enter the Indian market.
These are untested waters for a company like Fiat and it is unlikely that they will make such a move without one of their competitors entering the foray first. However, we can look forward to the Punto Evo- based Avventura crossover which is likely to be launched next month.
