India’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki has achieved another milestone. The company has made more than 25 lakh K-series engines since its introduction in 2008.
Currently, the K-series engine powers the Alto K10, Wagon R, Celerio, Ritz, Swift and the Ertiga. The engine made its debut in the now defunct A-Star hatchback in 2008. The engine is available in three capacities – 1.0-litre, 1.2-litre, and 1.4-litre.
C V Raman, executive director, engineering, Maruti Suzuki, said, "The K-series is one of the most refined gasoline engine technologies available in India. It is able to combine best in class fuel efficiency with superior performance. The cars powered by K-series have won customers' hearts and have become best sellers in their categories."
The K-series engines feature an all-aluminium construction and many new technologies. One of the highlights of the K-series engine is the rocker-less double overhead camshaft with low tension rings among many. These engines are manufactured at the company’s Gurgaon plant.
The K-series engine replaced the ageing G-series engines that were used in most Maruti vehicles. The company is planning more small cars that will be slotted in its vast product portfolio which will add up to increased production of the K-series engines. The upcoming Ciaz sedan will also be powered by a K-series engine. However, one grey area that the K-series powered Maruti has, is the lack of bottom-end torque, we expect the company to sort it in the near future.
