It was bound to happen at some point of time and it's better late than never for Tata Motors. The company is planning to take on the compact segment in India with a new offering rumoured to be named ‘Kite.’
According to a source, the company is planning its high volume model under its MY15 programme. The new model will roll out of Tata Motors plant in Sanand, Gujarat and will be launched in late 2015. The Kite is expected to take up most of the installed capacity of 2,50,000 units at Tata’s plant in Sanand.
"The company is looking at the vast potential as its current models like Indica cannot serve the small car market and Nano has not achieved the desired results. Kite would be placed in between the Nano and the Indica," a person closed to the development project said.
The source didn’t give many details about the project but it is assumed that the car will share the powetrains and mechanicals with its siblings. Although, we may not be surprised if Tata adds a new three-cylinder petrol and diesel engine in its line-up for the Kite. These are still early days but the small car will sport a tall-boy design and might compete with Maruti’s upcoming small car codenamed YRA.
Tata Motors having lost its market share due to dated and dull products is all set to spring back a surprise. The Kite will help achieve volumes for the company and that will help them maintain a stand in the market. Tata is also lining up two of its important products for launch this year, the Bolt hatchback and the Zest sedan.
