Nissan India plans to introduce more vehicles in the CS and crossover segment

Nissan has plans to launch more products in the Indian market. Their current market share is 1.1 per cent and by 2016-17 they plan to achieve 10 per cent share in India. The Japanese company will offer their products in the sub four-metre and light SUV segments.

Corporate vice-president (India, Africa and West Asia) Toru Hasegawa, said, “Last year, sales of hatchbacks and mid-sized sedans declined 10 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively, in India. The segments seeing growth are light sports utility vehicles and sub-four-metre sedans and we will focus on these segments. By 2016-17, we want to be a major force in the Indian market.”

The Indian car market has seen a shift in trends, with crossovers and compact sedans seeing a rise in demand. At the recently concluded Auto Expo this was emphasized with Chevrolet showing the Adra concept, Renault KWID, Volkswagen Taigun and Mahindra’s Ssangyong XIV-1 crossover. In the compact sedan space Ford showed its Figo concept, Tata brought its Zest and Hyundai showcased the Xcent sedan both sub four-metre products.

Although, there aren’t any more details on the platform that will underpin the compact sedan to be used or the engine range, Nissan will match what the competition has to offer. To avail of the excise concessions the length of the compact sedan and the crossover will be have to be under four-metres. And the engine capacity shouldn’t exceed the 1.2-litre for petrol and 1.5-litre for diesel.
