Hyundai's new compact SUV spotted testing in China

The Crossover market in India is booming; this was the last line from our report last week. Renault started the proceedings with the Duster and Ford brought the EcoSport and made it even merrier. The success of these vehicles has created a new segment altogether, one that has caught attention of every car maker. Hyundai, the No.2 car company in India, not to be left behind is working on its offering for this segment.  

Hyundai displayed the ‘Curb’ concept car in 2011 at the Detroit Auto Show and to say the least the concept looked awe-inspiring. The Korean company is now testing a production ready model based on the concept car and a heavily camouflaged test mule has now been spotted undergoing trials in China. 

The vehicle could be unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, which will happen in April this year. The Chinese car market might get the car this year, but expect it to be made available in India a tad later. But the possibility of the vehicle making it this year to our shores cannot be ruled out. 

Although, the exteriors are heavily camouflaged, we can expect the vehicle to wear the tried and tested Fluidic design. The interior pictures reveal only the AC vent for the rear passengers and the space for the passengers at the back.

Hyundai will be working to duck the vehicle under four-metres to avail the excise concessions. The crossover will also benefit from a new range of engines developed by the Korean car maker. A 1.0-litre engine with turbocharging and direct injection could be in the offing with the 1.4-litre CRDi diesel mill instead of the powerful 1.6-litre, as that might spoil the chances of excise qualifications. 

The crossover segment in our market, again? Yes, we have got another chance to repeat this statement and let’s see if we get another opportunity or more to write on crossovers for India.
