Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) is working hard to improve its product portfolio. Amidst this, we hear the country’s No.1 utility vehicles maker is developing a crossover based on M&M and Ssangyong’s joint platform project.
According to a report in a news daily, the project is named S102 and will be the first product to hit the road sitting on the Mahindra and Ssangyong joint platform project. The S102 will be based on the Korean company’s X100 concept car and will take on the Ford EcoSport. The said vehicle might see the dawn by late 2015 or early 2016.
The interesting part is that the S102 crossover could sport a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol motor which will be jointly developed by both the companies.
Talking about the powertrain development Dr. Goenka, Executive Director & President – Automotive & Farm Equipment Sector, said "We are jointly developing an engine family comprising of 6 different engines, but the big one is the new product based on X100 platform. I think people, begin to see the value of it and that will only grow." He added that the development process will take part in India and Korea.
The crossover segment is booming in India, the high demand for vehicles like Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster is an indication of the future shift in trends. Understandably, Mahindra wants a share of the pie.
