Volkswagen India may soon discontinue 1.6-litre Vento AT

According to a report in Overdrive the Volkwagen Vento AT may soon be discontinued in India and taking its place is the Vento TSI. The new Vento TSI was recently launched for Rs 9.99 lakh and comes with a 1.2-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine along with a seven-speed clutch automatic transmission. The older Vento AT meanwhile, came with a six speed torque convertor mated to a 1.6-litre petrol engine. However, it must also be noted that VW currently has the 1.6-litre AT version listed on its official website.  

The move is probably to cash in on the efficiency of the smaller engine of the Vento TSI because the 1.2-petrol gets both direct injection and turbocharging, it makes exactly the same power as the 1.6-petrol – 103.6bhp. The reason for this family sedan losing out in favour with the customers was the lack of service back up and a couple of features which were available with cars in its segment.

The Volkswagen Vento was launched in a total of five variants; three petrol and two diesel. These are the Trendline Petrol, Highline Petrol, Highline Petrol Automatic whilst the oil-burner’s will be the Trendline Diesel and Highline Diesel. Only the petrol engine in Highline trim gets a six-speed automatic transmission option. Now, with the discontinuation of the Vento automatic, Volkswagen will still continue using the 1.6-litre petrol engine for the manual versions. The Vento 1.6-petrol will now be available in three trim levels and only a manual gearbox.
