BMW may launch the 3 Series GT for the Indian market next year. According to a report from Autocar India, the German luxury carmaker will bring the GT version via the CBU route and will slot in below its bigger brother the 5 Series GT in the BMW hierarchy.
The 3 Series GT was unveiled at this year Geneva Motor Show and is a larger and more practical version of the 3 Series sedan. It is 200mm longer, 81mm taller and thanks to the extended length, a 110mm longer wheelbase than the standard car.
However, its main party piece is the extremely cavernous boot whose capacity can be extended up to 1600-litres when the rear seats are folded down ((40:20:40 pattern). It gets a Skoda Superb type notchback boot lid which is electronically controlled. The rear seats can be reclined for more space or consequently angled forward to extended the boots capacity by another 33-litres.
The 3 Series GT gets exactly the same interiors as the standard car but looks much bigger thanks to the extended wheelbase. It is pretty much the same story on the outside with regard to exterior design, with the only major change being the design of the rear end.
It is expected to be launched in two variants; the 320d and the 330d. The former will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mill while the latter gets a 3.0-litre straight-six engine. Both will make use of the ZF eight-speed automatic to send power to the rear wheels.
We expect that BMW will price the 3 Series GT, since it’s a CBU, Rs 20 lakh over the standard car and is likely to launch it at the 2014 Auto Expo.
