Maruti Suzuki has launched the WagonR Stingray hatchback for the Indian market for Rs 4.09 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is basically a sportier version of the standard WagonR with mostly cosmetic changes both inside and outside. It has been priced Rs 20,000 to Rs 25, 000 more than equivalent variant of the standard car. It is available in three trim levels and with one engine option.
Maruti Suzuki is offering the WagonR Stingray in three trim levels; LXi, VXi and new VXi optional variant. The highest spec variant get features like ABS, tilt-adjustable leather wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors and driver’s side airbag. The Stingray also gets a music system with USB and AUX, steering mounted audio controls and an all- black interior trim.
The front of the car has got the maximum number of changes with new bumper and large air dam, restyled fog lamp console, sleek front grille and refreshed headlamp cluster with projector unit (first in segment). The rear end of the Stingray has also been changed with slim clear lens lamps, boot spoiler and chrome inserts.
While the Japanese spec car gets a turbocharged 660cc (to comply with their small car regulations) we in India get the same 1.0-litre K-Series petrol mill that produces 68PS and 90Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via five-speed manual gearbox and ARAI fuel efficiency has been pegged at 20.51kmpl.
The WagonR Stingray is an attempt by the Indo-Japanese auto maker to boost sales of its popular tallboy which seems to have taken a beating due to the recession which consequently has resulted in a drop in demand for cars. The WagonR Stingray competes with the Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo, WagonR and the Tata Indica eV2.
