Mercedes-Benz India has launched the GL Class Launch Edition for Rs 77.50 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The second generation luxury SUV was unveiled in 2012 and features a significant amount of cosmetic changes over the previous generation SUV. The vehicle was launched by Eberhad Kern, CEO of Mercedes-Benz India and German tennis legend Boris Becker at a function in New Delhi.
The Indian spec 2013 GL 350 CDI will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 mill producing 259PS and 619Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a 7G Tronic gearbox and the German automaker’s very own 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The 2013 GL350 CDI is 90kg lighter than the current model, and is also 20 per cent more fuel efficient in the European driving cycle, despite higher power and torque figures.
It also has on the options list surround view, which utilises four cameras mounted around the car to give a 360 degree view to the driver via the screen in the dashboard. The third row of seats is folded or brought up electrically as standard. There are also other changes like the electrically-assisted steering, electric parking brake and our favourite - an optional audio system from Bang & Olufsen with a total output of 1200W from 14 speakers.
Mercedes-Benz is also offering the optional AMG body kit that comprises flared wheel arches, aluminium running boards with LED lighting, modified bumpers, sports brakes and AMG specific alloy wheels. The SUV will be brought into the Indian market as a CBU but Mercedes-Benz will begin assembling it at their Pune plant it from September.
