Ford will launch the EcoSport for Rs 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom) according to a report from in the Economic Times. This will be the price for the base variant while the top-end diesel titanium variant is expected to cost Rs 9 lakh. While this will undercut the Renault Duster by Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 lakh in both directions, we feel that it will be an introductory price for the highly anticipated SUV and that Ford will eventually hike the prices once the sales figures for the car go up.
The report also suggests that such a price the EcoSport will eat into the share of cars like the top-end i20, top-end variant of the Nissan Micra, the Maruti Suzuki Swift as well as the Dzire. At the other end of its price spectrum, the EcoSport will rival midsize cars like the Honda City, Volkswagen Vento and the Hyundai Verna all of those currently rival the Duster in terms of price.
The EcoSport models produced at the Chennai plant will be exported to over 50 countries and Ford will be use it to its advantage to set a competitive price for the compact crossover in India. It also means that whenever the EcoSport gets an update, we will be one of the first markets to receive it. This number is believed to around 40 to 50 per cent of the total annual production.
