How do you make an imposing and highly capable off roader even more imposing? Simple add two more wheels to the equation. Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it will have a yearly limited production of 20-30 units of a 6x6 version of the G63 AMG. It will cost thrice as much as the regular vehicle and will go sale from October.
The six-wheeled G63 is based on an Australian army-spec G320CDI. While the G320 is powered by a 3.0-litre diesel mill producing 235bhp and 540Nm of torque, the six-wheeled G63 will be powered by the AMG spec twin turbo 5.5-litre V8 petrol mill producing 536bhp and a monstrous 758Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the wheels via the German automakers seven-speed 7Gtronic automatic gearbox.
Given its off-road heritage and credibility, the six-wheeled G63 has a ground clearance of 18.1 inches and rides on 37inch wheels. The 758Nm torque is split between all three axles (30/40/30) and with an approach angle of 52 degrees, the six-wheeler can go almost anywhere. It weighs in at “slightly on the heavier side’ 3.7 tonnes. The car has been designed with a cab at the back (650kg payload) and a stainless roll cage.
Most of the interior trims, kit and features are exactly the same as the four-wheeled G63 AMG, that was unveiled globally a few months and for the Indian market a few weeks back.
The 6x6 G63 costs 137,000 Euros (Rs 97.95 lakh before taxes) and is the second most expensive three-pointed star after the SLS AMG Electric Drive which costs 416, 500 Euros (Rs 2.9 Crore before taxes). Not surprisingly most of the customers will be from countries in the Middle East due to their love for Mercedes-Benz SUVs and all things expensive.
