Recently I gifted a Mercedes E220 CDI to my parents for their 25th Marriage Anniversary.

On an ocassion like such it may seem to be difficult decision to decide what gift should be given but for me it was very clear from day one. Well there were many options like the 5 series, the Audi A6, Volvo and others. However, when I am paying 100% Cash Down and spending so much money on the car the car should be value for money. Value for money not only in terms of the real value to performance and features but to the name Mercedes. And please dont be blinded by the negative publicity BMW and Audi try to bring to it.  I have stayed in Dubai for 4 years and even within the Arab's a Mercedes is a different car from all others. All those who ever talk about BMW 5 Series or Audi A6 being more sporty. Why dont you people go and buy a Porsche Cayman or a BMW Z4 for that matter. If they want sporty cars why dont they buy a sports car. Why talk so much about being sporty. The sedans are suppose to be luxuriuos in a traditional way and Mercedes E class has done justice to that requirement. Now about the driving experience. It feels like driving a limousine being a sedan. Now isnt that great. after all Mercedes = No Substitute.

One and half year back I bought a new Mercedes benz E-250 CDI, just driven 30000 kms within chennai mostly in ECR and OMR, single handed vehicle. Haven't even made any hit or accident, but got problem in the wheel, when I checked with the service center they said there was a small crack in the alloy disc  it will not be covered under warranty even though the warrenty is 6 months more and suggested to change the disc and tyre. Finally they charged Rs.1.68 lks to repair / replace it. At the time of purchase they suggested me to buy the extended warranty package. But there is no use of buying the warranty package.

I totally disappointed with the quality and the service they provided. Before buying Benz think several times.

W124 E-220 is tank like feeling when you drive it. i have 1996 petrol version.

Exterior Star Logo at bonnet is so attractive and easy for kids to damage/bend/break it. Original cost is 5000 and locally available for 2000 Rs. But how many times we can afford???

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Good, Even after 13 years, still original leather is looking good. It almost faced 13 year of Indian summer!! Little less space of glove box. Seats and Space is very good.

Comfort and feel under control stable even at 160km speed.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Good.

Ride Quality & Handling Final Words- Value for money if we buy well maintained car.

Areas of improvement Dash board space to keep the things should be better. I owe this car since 15 months and my cost per km comes to approx Rs.18 per km which includes all costs such as fuel, insurance, tyres, service costs at authorised agent,

I drive hardly 5000 km per year and I can easily maintain Mercedes at the cost of just A star/Swift cost.

But the agent in Chandigarh (Earlier Tai-Pan and now Joshi Auto) do not keep any stock of spares and if you leave car, first they will give order spares and then call you for service. Spares takes 3 to 4 weeks to get from them.

Feel more safe and smooth ride and confortable handlingGlove Box at center only and relatively small

The bestselling mid-size luxury sedan rolled on the Indian roads in the year 2000. Completely re-designed in 1996, the Mercedes Benz E-Class went on to become the highest selling imported luxury car in the US. A new generation E-Class took a bow in 2003 with electronic braking and a new set of engines. This series was introduced to the Indian market as well.

The new version is rigged out with three new engines: 3.0L V-6 diesels, 3.0L V-6 petrol, and 2.5L V-6 petrol. The E-Class is perfectly tuned for comfort and luxury. This luxury sedan is loaded with safety features such as airbags, soft stop, and brake drying devices.

It competes with the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6.

      Exterior Beautiful, Luxurious styling.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Very comfortable, excellent wood trim, very supportive and big seats.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Very quite in comfort mode, shifting is smooth as silk, 7-gear Auto. Switch it in to 'S' mode, and the shifts are crisp and it is a different animal, its roar is changed and it is ready to jump. Ofcourse you want more, switch to manual shifting using the tiptronic, and you feel the curves on the road dissappear.  I had the chance of surprising a Z-370 (Bright Yellow) doing the curves at 100 to 160, making it difficult for the Z-370 to keep up and get a deserving salute.

Ride Quality & Handling The front 245/45 R18 and rear 265/35 R18 with the stebility system, stick to the ground like glue and give you immence control. Switch to comfort mode, and you will be gliding in Heven, with only sounds you hear are from your Hermon Kardon system.

Final Words I have a 2009 E 350; Black on Black.  Many features are programmable, interior Ambience; lights; runnign lights; wipers speed up according to the intesity of the rain.  command center info can also be seen in the dash board computer. Very refined German Technology, Extreamly safe. You will have a lot of people turning green (with envy).

Areas of improvement 2010 already has several new improvements - Car would know if you are feeling sleepy, if the lights are at high beam, and there is another car in the opposite direction, it lowers one of the light to help the other driver see the road.

Excellent Styling; Road Grip; Comfor; Performance; Luxury, AmbienceCost, People turning green with envy

When it comes to the ride characteristics,a high quality long distamce saloon such as the new E-class 220 is expected to deliver not only excellent ride comfort but also superlative driving dynamics. The twin headlamps have a clear glass look lending the face of E-220 an unmistakably high tech expression.Beneath the clear high shock proof, scratch resistant lenses of the twin headlamps lies truely state-of-the art technology’’Projector beam hehadlamps’’
The bonnet effortlessly merges with headlamps thus fashioning an elegant sculpture. The car has lower slung front end, giving a road head impression, further enhancing the sporty and dynamic appearance.
The wedge-shaped body riegnforces the sporty and dynamic appearance of E-220.The design principle-lines and surfaces stretching from front to rear gives the car a look that is timeless and classic on one hand, yet extremely powerful and superbly athletic on the other.
The tail end is compact and ’’muscular’’,drawing the dynamic lines of the body to an impressive conclusion. The upwards sweeping wedge-shaped rear and the low-slung rear apron are the major factors.

      Exterior

Its elegant but can be much better considering the segment to beat the competition.

      Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)

Top class, you feel luxury in everywhere, best in class for sure. You willl discover a new feature every 3 months even after you have driven it for years :)

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

Extermely Powerful, very good feel and surpising very good economical as well.

      Ride Quality & Handling

Top class, no match, road feels so smooth if you drive it or you are on the back seat, feels so safe as it holds the road tightly even at speeds around 200km/hr

      Final Words

Excellent buy no second thoughts and lives upto its brand. I do recommend to get one and its not speciifc to just e class but mercedes in general. The feel and performance is very similar for other cars. But 'E' class is definately a great car.

      Areas of improvement

Cost of spares need to be looked at, specifically in India. I am sure by fixing this, a lot of people will surely buy it as a lot can afford it but the concerns about the Maintenance holds them back.

Comfort, quality, stability, true luxury, amazing fuel economy though was not expected :)Parts & service unnecessarily expensive
