I am driving this car since January 2008. Was lucky enough to get my car delivered within 20 days of booking :-). The waiting period then was approximately 3 months.
I have clocked 11,000 plus kilometers in these 10 months, both in the city and on highways. The Swift is a pleasure to drive, the best parts of the car being
a) Really spacious front seats. I am on the heavier side but still find the car very very spacious. The back seats are just ok.
b) The air-conditioning is super cooling, I never keep the thermostat to "full a/c" but the cabin cools within a few seconds.
c) One of the most peppy cars I have driven. The engine is very responsive and delivers great power. Overtaking is never a problem on highways. The Swift gives great control at high speeds (the steering feels a little dead though when you are above 140km/h). I touched 180kmph speed while driving on Mumbai-Pune express highway but did not feel like the engine is being strained.
d) ABS is a real plus. I usually drive at high speeds and have found the ABS in action on many instances. It is really good to have the ABS. Worth spending that Rs.25,000 more if you are a speed freak.
e) The cabin is well insulated, outside noise and engine noise is heard very minimal inside.
f) Fuel economy: I mostly drive in Mumbai city traffic with the a/c on always. I get an average of 11.6 kmpl in city. When I go out on highways, i get an average of 16.5 kmpl. Now isn't that good for a petrol car?
Things that could have been better:
a) VXi does not have seat height adjustment. The company fitted seat position is a bit low and front left corner is not greatly visible, this makes it difficult to judge the car especially in city traffic like Mumbai's.
b) This strange rattling sound keeps creeping up sometimes. Cant really figure out what causes this, but can be a bit irritating.
c) The gear box - It is rough. Could have been more smoother, but it is ok.
Power, Handling, Braking, Air conditioning is too goodGear box is a bit rough and stuffy, rattling sounds start developing after a few months of drivingExterior/Styles

Exterior A good looking car for years and years which makes me to love for ever.
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Features are ok but not so feature rich due to the price tag, need to add some more features on the same price tag.MSIL doing cost cutting on basic things like rpm meter, Door ajar, Key reminder, Day/Night inside rear view mirror etc which is making bad for the buyers like me which are the useful stuffs, instead of this they can add or remove alloy/wider tyres, music system etc for the variants between LDi & VDi.Finally basic things to be provided. Its a driver's car space is good in front and average at back.Best comfort for Driver and Co-passenger in the front.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox I really enjoyed and enjoying the engine performance its a gem on the roads especially on the Highays. On the cities its ok but everyone will love it to have on the highways. I am getting a fuel economy of 18+ in city with 85% AC and 21+ in highways with 100% AC finally an average of 20.8 Kmpl has been obtained from my machine by tank-tank full method test.Engine response and refinement is far good than any other hatchbacks in this segment at this price tag.Gear box is smooth in all of the gears and delievering the optimum performance from the engine w.r.t the Transmission.
Ride Quality & Handling Superb and Excellent Ride Quality, Handling is good and excellent stability in all speeds. Creating tons and tons of smile everytime while sitting inside the car.
Final Words Great car with the price tag. MSIL Should decrease the waiting time they has to keep max of 15 days instead of keeping to 45 days and more. They has to increase the road visibility in front and back of the view. Finally it is worth to wait for getting an excellent machine.Maruti's A.S.S is good and providing peace of mind with lower maintanece Cost.
Great looks, Best Fuel Efficiency, Inspiring confidenceCheap interiors but not so cheap as Tata

Huh!!!!, I still can’t believe that I bought a car, a looooooongggggg time dream comes true and on top of that I am writing a review of it tooo. Ok, so coming straight to the point, here is what I have got, a Swift Vxi with ABS (Pre-Owned) bought at (Mahindra First Choice) Bangalore, 56k Done at the time of purchase. Paid 3.4L for it (I know it is a little more than an average dealer may have quoted, but comes with a warranty on the engine, gearbox, transmission and road side assistance as well) So most important parts are covered.
I opted for the petrol version as my usage is very less, maybe around 200 - 250 kms a month, and a decent diesel variant would be set me back by another 1.5 lacs which according to me is a huge sum to pay upfront for a used car, and to break even I would need to use it forcibly everyday, which again makes no sense. My office is nearby, just 5 kms from home and moreover I get cab facility from office as I work afternoon shifts, so doesn’t make sense to drive to work when you get free transportation. So my only usage would be on weekends when my family needs me to take them for a drive or to see some relatives in the city or maybe on a highway drive once in 2 months or more. Alright, so I got the delivery and took it for a spin straight away, of about 30kms, The engine revs neatly and was a smooth ride really, However the clutch was adjusted so I had to release it completely and rev a little to get a push, I got this changed as I was revving excessively to push the vehicle ahead from a standstill.
The ride quality of this car is neat, I mean it is sturdy, makes me feel really confident of the turns I take and also during maneuvers i execute during overtakes makes me feel real confident. It does make me feel each and every bump or potholes though, however that doesn’t really bother me as it has a real sturdy suspension. Most important thing that I feel makes this car feel good to me are the turns, while turning i do not feel any drag and it just does what to say, nothing more and nothing less.
Brakes on this car are superb, another thing that would give its driver the confidence. I didn’t like the horn on this car (UPDATE -- Stock horn is made by some company called Padmini), changed it with Minda dual horns (same ones as on Skoda, I love the way it works) get attention right away on roads and it sounds classy and at the same time means business. I feel that being a Vxi, it should have had electrically adjustable ORVM’s, but it has manual ones, adjustable from inside the car.
The fuel efficiency is somewhere in the the 13kmpl range, I am going to change the stock air filter with a K&N Stock Air filter for swift, I do not want to go for performance air filters as I am pretty happy with its current performance and do not really need a lot of speed. The K&N stock filter will kick in a few more horses and with a boost of around 1-2 kmpl more in terms of Fuel Economy.
I would wrap up now, I am not sure if I have covered all the points that i wanted to, but will add more as and when i recall or based on my future experience with this car. Overall, i feel it is a decent buy and the car is in Great Condition. Gave the car for a General Service at Green Cars, Bangalore (Authorized service center for Maruti). Even though the guys at Mahindra First Choice said that the car has been serviced already I found the Air Filter pitch black on both sides and saw carbon residue on the air intake valve passage, I was a little worried and thought I should give it for a thorough checkup and Service.
There were a few things that were done on the car today.
1) Decarbonising of the engine as well as the Air filter intake area. (Decarbonising clears off all the carbon residue inside the engine)
2) Changed the air filter as the one inside the car was not in great condition.
3) Spark plugs were in good condition so basic cleaning of the plug tip was done.
4) Brakes were cleaned, the Rear drum brakes were new (Replaced by Mahindra or maybe the previous owner) so nothing was needed to be done on those. Front brake pads were also good.
5) Car was cleaned from outside and inside (Was kind of a shoddy job though)
6) Gear was a little stiff, so that was taken care of as well as the clutch was set right.
7) The engine was idling at around 1100 rpm, which was a little on the higher side, Ideal rpm during engine idle is between 850-900rpm, so had that set right as well.
Once I had the vehicle after service, I can really feel a lot more punch in pickup and the engine sounds really smooth, clutch play is great now and the gear shifts are smooth as well. Overall a good job done. I was told by the service advisor to consider replacing the clutch assembly, however I wasn’t really prepared for that today, so didn’t get that done. I will observe the car for a while before i do anything.
So to sum it up, I am pretty satisfied with the car, interiors are good, exterior is neat, i love the handling and ride quality, Steering is very responsive. a little more FE might have been great, but i can live with it as i do not drive a lot. So overall I would recommend this car, I am not sure about the new K series engine that this car comes new these days, I am of an opinion that the 1.3 would be anyday little powerful that the 1.2 K series engine. Hope this helps.
Smooth Engine, Great pickup, Drive Quality, Space Inside, Superb HandlingMileage isn't great, Suspe nsion is a little stiff (knowing its rally based)

Exterior
Exterior of the new swift is stylish.. with the sparkling colours and alloy wheels..But the frog like look still reminds us that it was inspired from a two wheeler.. a saga of drunken dream from the suzuki chief engineer on the hayabusa.
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)
The length of 3850 and width of 1600 mm is so misutilized that it feels so cramped inside the vehicle when 5 medium sized people are seated. The automatic climate control is just for name sake.. it doesn't function well in hot exterior conditions especially when the drives are longer.
When the same is reported to the maruti dealer, he admitted that few new vehicles have the issue but it will get sorted out after few more hundreds of kms (I didnt' get this logic till now). The full black interiors are now seeming to be boring..
The driver seat is commanding and gives excellent visibility.. to the front.. but back tracking is a pain.. rear visibility is a product of the crap design..
The braking (WITH ABS,EBD, AND BRAKE ASSIST) is superb.. but available only in full option..without this, the brakes are somewhat like manual..
Clutch is very hard.. can cause knee pain in city traffic. But gets adjusted quickly due to high torque..
Distance to empty, avg fuel consumption are handy features.. but only in full option.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox
Good engine response, torque but engine requires to be taken care of like a baby.
Even the petrol Kseries should be maintained promptly else u end up paying huge bills at the service centre. NO WONDER MARUTI GIVES JUST 40000/2YRS WARRANTY.
They can't even think of offering more with this aluminium finished engine. Its not the rally engine that the swift actually has in India. Its just an aluminium based ion finished engine which lasts just 1st 1 or 2 years in stock condition.
Ride Quality & Handling
Superb ride quality in the first 3000 kms..after which the issues might show up.
Handling is also good.. but the suspension takes out all the fun if some bumpy road comes up.
The still super tight and rally based Mc Pherson Strut makes sure that the rear seat passengers are thrown up and down mercilessly..BEWARE.. this also starts after few thousand kilometers..
Final Words
No wonder this car is no where else welcomed other than the Indian subcontinent because it WAS a value for money in those days when first it was launched..Its time to look for better performing and fuel efficient value for money competitors. Try the Toyota Etios Liva, Ford figo, Mahindra Verito Vibe and VW Polo. The 2013 Liva is the best value for money and balanced hatch in the current market.
Areas of improvement
Suspension, Rear seat comfort, space, engine build quality, fuel efficiency.. even though it claims 15, it gives just 11/12 on the road.
Exterior styling is great.. drive is OK.Fuel economy, space, comfort, engine durability, old fashion interiors, rear seat is good for pets.

Purchased this car on 14th Mar 08 after a test drive of friends LDI model , great pick up , freat fuel economy - 16-18 km per litre now with 2200 km drive so far , spacious , pleasure to drive . very efficient AC , no effect on Pick up even with AC on , really liked the vehicle
Among Indigo CS , Logan , Santro , I10 , and SWIFT VDI , on test drive we found Swift VDI the best . At the top of it , Shakumbari Automobiles Roorkee and their staff really make us feel great by regular telephonic follow up about your satisfaction with car , seems MARUTI has improved a lot in customer care .
Rear seat could have been made in two parts with one part foldable . It would have added to flexibility of luggage carrying . Tool keeping space should have been designed .
But a great car .

Friends, It is tough to select a good car in the market. Especially when you have so much of a choice around you.
Let me come to the story of mine.
It all started couple of months back when I decided to sell my Tata Indica Petrol. (I know that was a blunder I do not want to repeat ever in my life...to go for a Tata and especially petrol). I had it for 5 years. It was giving almost 10 KMPL in Highway..! And slowly some issues started in it, so I decided to go for a new car.
The following were the choices which I choose out of the lot. My preferences went in the following order:
Good Resale value, Service, Reliability, Performance, Fuel Economy, Features, ABS and Airbags for safety, Practical, Good for both City and Highway, Good looks,
Some of the cars I did not even consider for my requirements because of the resale value and service.
I know you might be wondering why I have resale value on top, when I am going for a new car. that is one of the criteria where I hurt my fingers big time with my Tata indica - petrol. So I decided not to repeat the mistake consciously.
I had 2 options.
1. Sedan
2. Hatch back
From the Category 1 - I was looking for Honday City - GXi, Hyundai Verna - CRDi, Mitsubishi Cedia - spirit, DZire.
From Category 2 - the choices were Getz, i10, Swift (Diesel and Petrol).
Sedan Test Drive:
Out of the 3 I would rate Mitsubishi stands out in its features and ride quality. You will feel like you are sitting in your couch and driving. However, for resale value, Honda City beats all. Verna is also fine, but I want to mention that the package is not very attractive like the other 2. After I test drove all these cars, came to the conclusion, GXi is the best choice for all the conditions which I had in my priority list. Dzire is out of question as the waiting period for test drive itself is too much and they said I need to wait for 9 months to get the delivery. I thought by 9 months time, there might be another 10 versions of other cars which might be launched...!
Hatchback Test Drive - All 3 cars are good. Getz failed in my first criteria of resale value. i10 and Swift were both nice cars. However, when evaluated, i10 was a risky proposition as it is newly launched, whereas Swift has a track record. It has both good ride quality, features are packed, security, etc. i10 I found is a bit small than Swift and definetely Swift has a good road presense. You can make some heads turn with swift.
I also boiled down to practical cars and I found all the Sedan Cars offer more space in boot which is not a mandatory criteria for my type of travel. Also, it occupies more space in parking, road, etc. So I decided to go with the basic need for commute instead of overdoing things and get into financial issues ( I think that is a fair advice to all...if you do not find the purpose of a sedan, I think you should go for a smaller car - which serves the purpose).
I drive everyday in highway almost 30 KM one way from home to office and in city approx 100 KMS over the weekends. So I thought I would go for Diesel because of the appreciations in the news papers and other comments in Carwale itself. However, when asked for the top end model again, there is a 2 months wait period and also, one of the second hand car dealer mentioned, for any diesel engine we generally need to wait and watch for 3 to 4 years as that is the time when the engines start giving trouble. Since Swift diesel was launched somewhere in 2007, I thought of taking less risk and went for petrol version.
However,I have not decided on which version to go for. I almost zeroed on VXi. But my final decision came in a spur of a moment when I saw Swift ZXi Model and was totally impressed with the ride quality, resale value, features, looks, security features and value for money.
I took the vehicle last week and I am already having a feeling that I have made a very good choice. I saw one more review stating the bumby ride for back seaters. I believe that is true to some extent, but for our road conditions, I would think even a very good car like BMW might have the issue.
I am yet to calculate the mileage but my guess work is approx >16 KMPL (with complete AC - both City and Highway combined). I think that is good.
For this price only Swift gives you this much feature rich vehicle. i10 is also packed with similar features but priced less. However, as mentioned before Swift is less riskier option compared with i10.
I would strongly recommend ZXi Swift for anyone...wholeheartedly.
