The environment friendly car technology in India has so far been restricted to small vehicles like the Reva or the Honda Civic Hybrid. But it hs finally moved down to SUV's with Mahindra Scorpio.
The Scorpio has been around for almost a decade now, and ideally speaking it should be due for a retirement anytime soon. But Mahindra has been constantly working on the Scorpio. The latest evolution is the VLX Micro Hybrid. It looks like a normal Scorpio but there has been little styling changes. Crucially, it has now got the Start-Stop Technology. The Scorpio Micro Hybrid is not a conventional hybrid car. Unlike a Honda Civic Hybrid, the scorpio does not get an electric motor to back up the petrol or diesel engine. Instead, what you get in Micro Hybrid is Start-Stop. When you stop, put the gear into neutral and let go of the clutch, the engine cuts off after 5 seconds. That is it, you are saving fuel and saving the environment. When you have to get moving again, simply press the clutch and the engine revs up to life instantly.
It does save fuel, and around the world start-stop is used in a lot of city cars to save fuel in city traffic conditions. When the engine cuts off, the air-conditioning also cuts off. In the sweltering Indian heat, it is unsure how many people would actually let the engine cut off. If you are willing to overlook the perspiration, this system does make a difference. The Start-stop when put to test returned mileage figures of 10.09 kmpl with the system turned on and 9.82 kmpl with the system turned off. It is not a significant increase, but every little bit of fuel saved will help in the end.
In scorpio, the Micro Hybrid Technology is allied to the 2.2 litre mHawk engine which impressed us all when it was launched last year. The all aluminum engine is 130 kgs lighter than its predecessor and the resulting difference in dynamics is altogether apparent. The Scorpio was once a very heavy ride. But things have improved a lot and the recent switch from leaf springs to coil springs has made a lot of difference. The ride is more composed, the Handling is decent and though it tends to roll and wallow a bit, it is quite within acceptable parameters.
I once put on 10000 kms on Scorpio driving around in Rajasthan, and I enjoyed every single Km of it. Now with its improved engine, performance has gone up, fuel efficiency has gone up, it is more refined and crucially, because there is less weight upfront, handling is also better. Overall it has become a much safer and nicer drive.
Micro Hybrid Technology costs and additional Rs.3000. Not a big hit on your wallet given the benefits of saving the environment and saving money in the long run.
The Scorpio might be old but Mahindra’s constant tinkering with the car has managed to keep it fresh and relevant in this day and age. It still looks very manly and very SUV like. Scorpio is also the rare SUV in which you get Automatic Transmission. You can also get optional 4WD in this car. You get captain seats at the rear which makes it a comfortable long distance tourer. It suits many needs and many requirements. Clearly Scorpio is a cut above its competition right now.

Exterior The exterior of the vehicle is very chunky and stylish. The leg support rack given on both sides of the vehicle prevents any other car..etc to scratch or dent ur car. The body is solid and resist reat impacts too. very stylish and pobust look.
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) The interior is full of features starting with theater like illumination, good AC vents for entire car, very muscular steering, cup holders, the voice assist system is one of the best which warns you .. if door left open, parking brakes on or seats belts..etc, other features like Auto Viper,Auto head lamps, rear demistifier, rear viper etc..good music system with blutooth conevtivity.. but iots better to replace the speakers with JBL one..and the Tyretronics which gives you very accurate tyre pressures and Temperature's all the time.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox The M-hawk is a real mean machine with 120 horse power, I bought my6 scorpio on 4th nov 10(DIWALI) and then drove from chennai to bhopal via hyderabad and nagpur a total of approf 3400 kms (to and fro)and really got a very good mileage of around 13.5 throughout the trip (AC not used much being winters) then last week drove from chennai to belgaum with my entire family via bangalore a total of around 2204 kms (to and fro) with always AC on and got a good mileage of 12.5+ ..and best part was most of the time driving speed was 110 and above only. Total my car has driven 12600 kms in six months including city drive of Chennai.. really feel king of the road.. but pls never ever drive in a RASH manner.. as i am a decent driver.. I try getting maximum mileage by following the simple driving skills given by experts on the same site.
Ride Quality & Handling The Cruise control feature makes the Highway drive so interesting that you dont feel and pain or tierdness even after driving 900 kms in one day.. as I did it covering the hyderabad to bhopal distance of 906 kms in one day itself and entire distance covered by self driving.
Final Words Good and very good.

Exterior
She is built to impress. She turns heads and keeps bikes, autos and most small cars at bay. She is as sturdy as a fortress. I've been head butted by a water tanker and a bus on two separate occasions (not my mistake on both), and there are marks on her which are almost invisible. She is as photogenic as a kingfisher calendar model. The arches and the curves all merge with each other. I had one friend from the US commenting that she looks one mean looking machine with her gladiator style bumpers. No wonder, she is the most desirable SUV.
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)
I am all of 6'2" and I fit quite snugly inside her. The seats provide the right back and thigh support to ensure a very comfortable long drive. Leg space is considerable and though I push the driver's seat right back, my family is quite comfortable in the middle row of seats. The built in 2din is adequate for me as I dont expect humongous bass boost in the car. The feature I use the most is the bluetooth enabled handsfree to attend conference calls on the move. The blue-vision headlamps are also quite bright and I dont have to squint to look ahead. Also, there is something that I dont think anyone else anywhere has written on; the hella horns. The blare is enough to scare truck drivers from butting in without notice. The reversing sensors are also very helpful in guiding me to park my beauty perfectly.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox
She is a year old now and with 16500 kms on the odo, gives me an efficiency of 12 Kms per litre of diesel (with AC) in the city. The engine is a bit sluggish at low rpms but she more than compensates when she is in groove. The gearbox is user friendly, no rubbery engage, no long throws. You need to feel her when she is in turbo (more than 85 kmph), there is no uncertainty, just thrill.
Ride Quality & Handling
To know her is to feel her....the feedback is just excellent. Those who feel that big cars are difficult to manouver will be pleasantly surprised. The steering has the right feel, not light at high speeds nor heavy at low. The suspension is soft and a wee bit bumpy but I think I need that in Mumbai where the road conditions are disastrous. She is a pleasure to drive and especially as I've already spoken, the turbo buzz is addictive when she crosses 85 kmph. She is built to thrill.
Final Words
For anyone looking for a SUV at 11-13 lakhs, the Scorpio VLX is a must buy. She is loaded with features and there will be no regrets. Remember the slogan....Nothing else will do.
Areas of improvement
Mahindra, I feel, need to be more stringent in their quality checks on parts when they dispatch their Scorpios from the factories. There are minor niggles that could leave a sour taste. If these are taken care of, I dont feel there is a better VFM SUV in the 11L - 20L price range.
