I was looking for a MUV/SUV and test drove Scorpio Vlx, and the Innova.  I had always dreamt of owning a scorpio from the time it was launched but could not afford it at that time.  When we test drove the Innova we were pleased with the interiors and the space inside the vehicle and the overall refinement.  But like I said earlier, I always wanted to buy the Scorpio and hence headed towards the nearest Mahindra showroom.  My heart changed once I saw the new Scorpio. I just could not but appreciate the beast.

Exteriors:  The looks of the Scorpio still stings in one's mind. Its tall stance makes you feel like a king of the road.  The headlamps cluster and the tail lamp cluster look well carved out.  However the stickering in the Vlx version makes it look like a chessboard (the only difference between the looks of Crde/SLE versions and Mhawk apart from badging). The looks are however subjective to individuals and hence my personal rating on a scale of 5 would be 4 .

Interiors:  Overall you would not be happy with the interiors of this SUV.  The fit and finish is just not there.  The finish in the center and gearlever and other switches look cheap and feel cheap too.  There are storage spaces all over but still you cannot store a book etc.,   The front door map pocket cannot be used until you open the door.  The fabric on the seats is still not of great quality considering you are spending close to Rs.12 Lakhs.  I had hoped that Mahindra would give leather seats and a better finish.  The Steering mounted controls are good and tilt steering is very difficult to operate.  The rattling of the seats would annoy anyone since it is bound to be present once you have done about a few thousand kilometers. The seats are very comfortable though for long rides.  I had travelled about 600 kms in a stretch with a couple of breaks and was not feeling too tired.  Overall Rating 3.

Performance : Switch on the engine, you would immediately know the difference in refinement of the new mHawk engine and once you drive it you would forget about the fit and finish.  It is really a bomb to drive. There is no lag in power afterall it is 120 BHP engine  and the engine just screams to be unleashed.  Though the body roll is still evident but the braking has improved thanks to the ABS.  Overall the handling is much better than the old scorpio (crde included) .  The steering feels a little more connected you however still dont get the confidence to test the corners at high speeds. I had hoped that Mahindra could work on the body roll of the car. The suspension is improved and the ride is more comfortable now.  I found that the gearshit was a bit hard especially on a cold start as well as shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and it really needed some effort for changing.  The middle row had some space now (on a 7 seater) as it was placed right back, though not as comfortable as a Tata Safari. The seats are very comfortable though.  I had recently travelled more than 600 kms in a day (with a couple of short breaks) and I did not feel that tired.  The brakes have improved though would require a few.

Other : The milage or economy is claimed to be 12 Kmpl in city (though I doubt it) and there are nuemerous gizmos offered for this variant.  The tyretronics, steering mounted audio controls, cruise controls, intelligent wipers are quite good but there are no Airbags (surprising when you consider the cost you are paying).  The reversing of this large SUV is made simple with the smart parking camera which animates the scene behind the scorpio in the parking mirror and alerts you with a beep when you are close to the object.  These are good features but the Mahindra would have a lower end versions.  Driving this SUV in the city is a delight for its light steering and other traffic would make way and respect you.  The follow me home headlamps are good and Overall you would not be disappointed if you are driving. The last seats are best avoided in case of long journeys. Moreover, the fit and finish gets you sometimes when you compare with any other sedan given the rattling of the seats as well as the NVH.

Overall :  Lot of features including cruise control but sadly Air Bags is missing.  The Scorpio just got a change of heart and improved handling.  If only it had other variants it would have been a real value for money.  I had hoped that there would be EBD as well as climate control.  The Knobs are of poor finish and the cost savings / cutting is evident.  It actually makes you feel like a king though your mind would say it it a touch expensive. Given that there are a very few choices at that price range, I would still call it a best buy.  The service is a pain though which sadly needs to improve than just washing the car.  Lights are very poor and range is bad.

Have done about 25,000 kms and the following is my update

      1. Handling is much improved and with the power you have it feels like a breeze

      2. Initial pickup is something which is lagging

      3. Milage is only around 10 kms per liter

      4. Seats and doors rattle every now and then which can be fixed with spanners. Do it yourself type

      5. Lights are not at all good in case of night driving on narrow roads.

      6. Quality of the wipers when used in heavy rains is pathetic

Well It has been a long time since I gave an update.  I would like to share my experience with me completing around 26K Kms which includes city driving as well as highway.

The SUV is vastly improved in handling over the earlier versions.  I was impressed by the improvement is the stability as well as the braking though it is still not top notch and high speeds may scare you with it bumpy ride.  The issues start after you complete say about 20K Kms and I was not exception.  The alternator failed, mileage dropped to below 10 and the worst part the service is pathetic.  The seats and other parts started to rattle again and again and I was highly disappointed with this. The Service PErsonnel hardly care about customer satisfaction and do a shoddy job. Even writing to customer care did not yeild the desired results.

It has been around 4 years since I have the Scorpio.  Overall the machine is quite good however, some hitches in terms of rattling noises and electrical issues continue to irritate you.  Touch wood, there has been no major spend on repairs.  Milage is still around 10 Kmpl in the city and around 12-13 on the highway. Barking and bodyroll tends to be an issue on the highways.

Great Power, Light Steering for City Traffic, Upright Seats,Very Bad Leg Space - very less space, Still unstable at high Speeds, Overall Fit Finish not good

Well, I test drove Innova, Safari Dicor, SX4 and Scorpio SLX as well as VLX, the only one that won my heart and mind was Scorpio VLX. I bought it about 3 weeks back and have already done 3500kms... I took her straight to rajasthan for a family holiday. Few things that i Like about her 1) It gave me mileage of 13/14 on the entire trip as i never went above 100kmph (the break-in period is 1000 kms on the owners manual but i will wait till 5000km i.e. 1st service). I consider this great mileage given that the Gujrat highway was under construction and i got bad traffic for about 200/250 kms. 2) 7 Ppl were really comfortable in the car, i have bought the captain seat version. 3) Driving for long hours was not very uncomfortable, I have done a couple of long drives in my Accent as well as Esteem, Scorpio is more comfortable. Cruise control rocks specially on expressways. 4) Did some off-road driving in ranthambore it was really awesome, was paisa wasool drive for me. Cant imagine taking a car for such a drive it had to be a scorpio. 5) All the extra feature like tyre pressure, auto lights and wipers are quite useful but the cruise control and Audio settings on the steering are really awesome. 6) Handling is very easy never did i miss any for my old cars, in fact scorpio made me realize what i was missing in my previous trips. I really fell in love with Scorpio during my trip, Im back in Mumbai now, driving in the city is a pain (Traffic sucks) she keeps telling me to set her free, but Im too conscious speeding in the city, may be will take her on another small trip during the weekend. I have not found too may things that irritate me in this beauty apart from the suspension it gives me a feeling that i'm in a small boat. My little daughter used to hate sitting in the car for more than an hour (may be she felt claustrophobic) but she absolutely loves the scorpio. Nothing more a dad can ask for. Will definitely post another one after the first service is done. This is my first post hope u find it useful.Good Style and fuel economyBad Suspension

I picked up the M-Hawk in May08 after a long wait and multiple evaluations of SUV's - (Safari, Endeavour & Pajero) . Already covered 10500 kms until now, with 45% highways and rugged perfidous terrains and rest of them in City. Absolutely impressed by the power of the vehicle , and literally once you are crusing or at high speeds, the engine just gives a soft whrr. Thats' it. The city driving is at ease with the engine extremely responsive in the low gears, quick accelerations to fill the gaps. No time lag at all in pick up. The cruise and audio controls come in really handy in the long journeys. Enjoyed the crusing feature on Hosur - Krishnagiri strech.  After the 3000 kms , the gears have become extremely smooth. The mid row is adjustable and my family loves it with way it creates spaces and makes them comfortable. The longest streched covered was from Bangalore - Kochi - Munnar - Udumalpet- Trichur - Bangalore . Total of 2100 kms in 3 tank fills. (Aproxx 14.8kms/ltr). City Mileage varies between 10 kms/ltr - 11kms/ltr It just loves the dusty roads and makes the drving way easy in the extreme conditions. Absolute Power, makes you climb the Ghat sections with ease, even with the AC on and downpour outside. I almost tortured the vehicle mercilessly , taking it through the gruesome potholes and slushy muddy roads. Each time it came responding powerfully taking us with as much safety. ABS works and stops the monster wherever i braked in the wet conditions. All the latest feature turns out to be extremely handy , one things which is missing is the GPS . The tyre tronics were really handy , indicating the temperatures , when i was hitting 150 kms for more than 15-20 minutes on the Coimbatore - Palghat by-pass strech. The rain and light sensors came very handy , when the moods of the Munnar Mountains played their own sing song. The weather conditions changed dramatically from mountain to mountain , with sunshine on one end and thick dense dark clouds on the other.  The AC is very adequate and powerful keeping the interiors chilly throughout.  Well there are improvements required in the deck and console, forget it when you get an effortless acceleration , the road is all you want to cover. Sitting behind a monster and you will love the ride thouroghly. It is hugely comforting for my family , that they are always in this vehicle , due to the improved suspensions. No bend and twist , halt and jolt. Third row is little cramped , though with the middle row adjustments , you can make people comfortable there. You don't expect to take loads of people every you drive . Do You?   Enjoy the ride with confidence and be assured you have have a good value for money going in there at 12 lacs.  Nevertheless fetches you a good value in the Seconds Market. Maintenance is fairly low and easy  on your pockets. An assuring voice , which reminds you of the handbrakes on or fuel is running low or the seat belt not hooked , makes you believe that it is talking to you.The Custormer Service Experience is a marked improvement  from the reviews which i read, where i get a call every month from Mahindra's to know how the vehicle is performing.   The next vehicle to pickup is the Scorpio Hybrid with all the loaded features.
Extremely Silent Engine - A soft whrrr while crusing, Highly Responsive, Very Fuel Efficient,Little bit Cramped in the 3rd Row, for the 8 seater . Though the 7 seater would be an addvantage

I had been planning to buy a Scorpio for last 2 years and in fact I had booked it once in 2005 and then cancelled it. My two best friends drive scorpio. One of them drives the old CRDE model and the other new SLX (with bonnet scoop). Both of them love their scorpios.

Finally decided to buy one and fortunately the MHawk launched just in time. Yes, that's right .. fortunately !!

I booked the car even without taking a test drive, reason simple - I trust Mahindra, love the scorpio, new advanced engine and other cool features, and not to miss better fuel efficiency. I read a lot of reviews and was hesitant to buy the MHawk for a price of 10.5 initially, however now I think it is well worth it.

To be specific about the pleasure of driving

      1. Parking sensors work great

      2. Have not switched on the headlights till now (have been driving for last one week) - sensor headlights

      3. ABS

      4. Engine feels powerful (my two friends who own Scorpios fell in love with this one and told me that this is much better than their own)

      5. Quiet - Sounds like a petrol car

      6. I thought cruise control was a waste but actually it is not that bad.. I have used it couple of times and works fine and is kinda cool

Having said all that, I wished they had given better music system, electronic side view mirrors, air bags etc..

Anyway.. I will be able to confirm the mileage in the next couple of days once I refill again.

All those planning to buy.. I would say 'Go for it'

      Cheers

      Sumit

Hi friends...i bought mahindra scorpio 2.2 mhawk vlx last week only and till now i have travelled more than 1000 kms in it and one thing i have to say is that the ride quality of scorpio has improved very much,i mean its very comfortable in the middle row but the last seat row is not that much good..the a.c of the scorpio is very very powerful as it hardly takes 30 secs to give you cold chills...adding to it are the automatic features which new mhawk comes with, personally i liked the automatic engine cut off feature.......i am getting an mileage of around 12kmpl in delhi traffic and on highways i clocked 15kmpl but i never crossed the 80km speed limit on highway...i think buying a scorpio is really an good idea plus you gets road respect which you won't get in innova(no offense to innova lovers).

      thanks

      amit.

Its been one month now that i am driving around town in my new scorpio vlx and now i am facing the first problem with it:-The micro hybrid button which is supposed to switch off the engine while the suv is in neutral position had stopped working.I think out of 10 times i tried it,it only responded max 4 times. Also i will like to tell my friends who are in mood of buying the scorpio is that the fit and finish of this suv is very pathetic,i mean to say the plastic which is used on outside of the suv is so bad fitted that you can see the gapes in it very clearly.Similarly the cover of the glove box in the dashboard won't close until you devote 2-3 minutes in closing it because it so badly fitted in the dashboard..

The good thing is that i am getting a mileage of 12kmpl in city and 15kmpl on the highway apart from the pleasure of crushing bad pot holes and fear on the faces of drivers of small cars.I have also installed the gps security navigator in my suv which helps me track my car any where in india and i can also switch off the ignition from my mobile through a single sms and the engine would simply die untill i will send one more sms to start it up.

powerfull engine , good ride quality and lot of road respectinteriors very old and lacks the character to match this powerfull bull

I just bought the Scorpio VLX a week back. My earlier car was Ford Ikon 1.3 Nxt. I still keep that car. Scorpio is giving better comforts. Features like tyretronics, auto lights, auto viper, cruise control etc are great. Though it is difficult to drive in city traffic with the frequesnt change of gears, it is cool for high ways. For the price paid, VLX also must have Airbags & electrically controlled mirror. Over all, the car needs more finishing both internal as well as external.Good looks, Great feeling, Comfortable rideCloth upholseriries, No airbags, No electrical mirrors, No roof ACs

I bought a Mahindra Scorpio 4 months back and has completed 4,000 KMs. This is my third car, after a Maruti-800 and Ford Ikon. Since the Ford is already with me, I thought of going for an SUV rather than another car.

The seating is excellent with good view and driving comfort. You can drive it on all roads-smooth or rough at the same speed. I could drive it to Kerala from Bangalore at record time. The ground clearance is very good making it apt for Indian roads. There are a lot of features working on sensors like tyretronics, headlights, wiper, etc. The cruise control is good only on a long drive.

      Draw backs:

      1) The 2nd & 3rd gear is very tough in the morning.

      2) The interiors are not class.

      3) The AC duct is given on the floor for the rear side. This should have been on the roof.

      4) There is NO safety airbags

      5) Mirrors are NOT electrically adjustable.

      6) Sensors are given under the driver's seat without any proper cover or shield.

      7) Most of the attachments are filmsy and gives you continuos trouble.

At the kind of price offered, customer definitely looks for better features and interiors

I have just given it for first service and hope it will be a better ride in future.

      .

Good comfort, excellent seating posture, drive-by-wireSub standard interiors, hard gears, regullar irritations

Exterior The muscular look of the Scorpio gives it a good presence on the road and command respect from other drivers.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) The seats though rigid, are comfortable. The quality of plastic used for dashboard and elsewhere appears cheap and the fitment are mediocre, The leg space for the thrd row seats is not sufficient, especially for tall people. I could make my vehicle's seat comfortable by fitting new covers with soft foam fills.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Engine performance is good, though it lalcks power with AC on for a qucik overtake. I get the specified fuel economy easily. It, ofcourse to a certain extent, depends on the driving style. Gear shift initially, after an overnight stop, is hard and after ten or fifteen KMs becomes very smooth. In heavy trafic, frequent shifting may become necessary due to reduced torque in  top gears.

Ride Quality & Handling Ride quality is good in highways. In rough roads it rolls uncomfortably, may be due to its soft shock absorbers. My friends tell me that it can be improved by replacing the shockers with high performance ones like Bilsteins.  Ease of handling is the best feature I like. It can be manouvred like a small car in busy and narrow streets.

Final Words Overall it is very a good and reliable feature rich vehicle in its price band. I have no regret in opting for it.

Areas of improvement High pperformance shock sbsorbers are a necessity  to reduce the rolling. Improve quality and fitment of plastic and redesign the dashboard center console to include a multifuction display system, like rear view camera and sat nav. Use atifog glass for front windows and ORVMs. Its height and width calls for side and front distance sensors. A strip of dayflx LEDs around front fog lights will tremendously improve its exterior looks.

Fuel economy, ease of handling in city roads and country roadsLess power to overtake with AC on, Poor side and rear visibility in heavy rain
