The Freelander2 may not be the old and rugged Defender you’ve seen in the 1966 classic movie Born Free, but it’s unmistakeably Land Rover as far as its DNA is concerned

The Freelander project began in the late-80s. The Rover Group, the then owner of the Land Rover wanted to develop a compact utility vehicle (initially codenamed as CB40). The Rover had limited budgets for this project and so it used spares from the MGF Roadster to build the concept. When BMW took over the Rover Group in 1994, it injected some funds and the Freelander went on sale in 1997.
