    DRIVING:
It's been 2 years since I bought the Elantra GLS. Almost bought the Corolla till I test-drove one of these beauties. The Elantra is by far the best all-rounder available in this segment. I would have gone for the Skoda if I drove long distances, but I don’t; and the cost/ benefit comparison doesn't come even close to the Elantra which was available to me under 10L. Since I bought it the price has become even more inviting with a GLS on raod in Delhi at 9.2 or so! The car has distinctly European styling (the side-on view is delicious) and is a Sunday morning dream to drive. Strong without being beastly, silent, graceful and comfortable; what seduced me was the high end torque and the smooooothest gear shift compared to the harsh Toyota/ Optra box. This thing runs like milk and honey if fed on premium petrol (which helps both with its compression ratio and hedges against the poor quality regular fuel we get here) and gives me a steady 9- 10kpl in Delhi. The sound system is competent, the car is loaded with features, the climate controller is very efficient and the steering is precise. The traction kicks in when I take off from signals or roll on muddy stretches and the ABS comes handy when you are forced to stand on the brakes by some dim wit (of which Delhi has no shortage) And yes I GREW to quite LIKE the nose styling!!! Call me quirky! While comparing, once I had test driven all, I found the Corolla too unrefined and boxy though very fast. The Skoda sales people too arrogant with the car rear seat slightly larger than a parcel tray, and the Optra LS too sluggish, with a vague gear shift, yet the best looker and stylish. The Elantra, while scoring second best in all the characteristics above, eventually came out tops because it doesn't have the glaring flaws of the others and is, though understated, one very well rounded package. As a satisfied customer I am amazed that the Elantra is still the best-kept secret in the D segment and doesn't sell more than it currently does. Customers must cut through brand perceptions and recognize true value when they see it.Great Value for Money deal, very competent cruiser, great brakes, excellent climate control systemlight colour fabric, no MP3!!!!
