Although monsoon provides much needed respite from the crazy summer heat, accidents also increase. Driving in wet weather is dangerous as poor visibility, low tyre grip are just some of the problems a driver must deal with. As usual, we lend you a helping hand.
Simply turn on the headlights on low beam when it rains, even during the day, to allow other drivers to see you sooner in poor visibility. Avoid high beam as it reflects off the rain making it harder for you to see where you're going. Signal your turns earlier than usual to give other drivers and road users adequate warning.
The most dangerous time to drive during monsoons is when it first starts to rain. Greasy substances and debris accumulate until the rain washes it away on to the road. This dramatically impacts the drivers' ability to drive and also affects braking distances and vehicle handling, leading to a much higher risk of accidents and mishaps. So maintain adequate distance from the car in front of you.
Don’t speed, when driving over water, as you could lose control of your vehicle due to aquaplaning. Don't brake, just let off the throttle, and don't make any sudden moves. Once you slow down you will have better control over your car.
Apply brakes only when you get back a feel of grip. Slamming on the brakes on a wet surface may result in skidding thanks to poor grip. Avoid turning suddenly on a wet road as this can destabilise the tyre contact and cause skidding. It may also cause the car to flip over.
Water level above tyre level - Don’t even attempt to cross the water. Stop driving as the force of the water will be greater than the weight of your vehicle.
Water level below tyre level - Shift into first gear and keep a steady pressure on the throttle to maintain relatively high engine revs to avoid water from getting into the exhaust.
Car submerged in water - Do not even attempt to start the vehicle. Get the vehicle inspected by an expert immediately.
