The Nexon SUV has been in the news plenty thanks to all those spy shots stirring up a string of speculations. While we have a fair inclination of what the Nexon will look like, Tata has gone ahead and given the powertrain options as well.
Powering the production spec Nexon will be two engines, the 1.2L Turbocharged Petrol from the Revotron series and the 1.5L Diesel engine from the Revotorq family. The 1198cc turbocharged petrol is a 3-cylinder unit and will push out an impressive 110bhp and 170Nm of torque. This will be coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. The 1496cc diesel makes an identical 110bhp too but a higher 260Nm of torque. The diesel too gets a 6-speed manual that should aid drivability and fuel efficiency. And yes you can expect an AMT variant to be available as well.
Designed at Tata Motors’ in-house facility in Pune, these engines have been indigenously developed with inputs from global technology suppliers like AVL, Bosch, Mahale and Honeywell. The Revotron engine will be manufactured at the Sanand facility while the Revotorq engine will be produced at the Ranjangaon facility.
Also according to Tata, the Nexon will offer a first in the segment multi drive modes – Eco, City, and Sport. While the Eco mode has been designed to offer a relaxed drive experience with better fuel economy, the City mode enables for a comfortable city drive ensuring optimum balance between power and torque. The Sport mode on the other hand permits better throttle response for a more spirited drive experience. The new engines are manufactured to be light on weight and low on friction and expected to deliver high performance and fuel economy.
The Nexon has some extremely strong competition to take on with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the Ford EcoSport, both which are doing extremely well. The Nexon will have to bring a lot more than just radical styling to the table to make a mark, but we think Tata might just pull this off. Keep watching this space for more!
