Suzuki to recall 16 lakh cars in Japan

Suzuki Japan has said that it will recall about 16 lakh small and compact cars built between 2008 and 2015 for a technical issue related to the air conditioning system defect.

The air conditioning compressor is connected to the engine crank and draws power through the belt drive system. The issue that affects the Suzuki cars is the lack of adequate lubrication of the compressor. The compressors then tend to overheat and stop. This results in excess load being transferred to the engine through the crank which can result in the stalling of engine during deceleration. While 240 related cases have been reported to Suzuki, there is no news of any associated accidents or injuries as yet.

One of the cars affected is the Suzuki Wagon R. We do have the Suzuki Wagon R in India, but, the Indian car is almost nowhere related to the Japanese spec car. The Japanese Wagon R gets the 660cc turbocharged petrol engine that develops 63bhp of power. The Indian Wagon R on the other hand gets a 1.0-litre three cylinder naturally aspirated K10 engine that develops 67bhp of power. The Indian car, being built entirely in India with almost no imported components, will not be affected by this recall.
