Following months of rumours and speculations, Mercedes has finally showed off the all-new X-Class pick-up albeit in concept form. This all new offering has sparked plenty of debates around a simple question – does the world need a premium pick-up truck? Nevertheless, the X-Class is here to stay. With the X-Class, Mercedes has become the first luxury manufacturer to cater to the global segment of mid-size pickups. The X-Class will be launched as a one-ton pickup with seating for up to five people.
Design highlights on the concept include the unique metallic white paint, flared front and rear wings, a wide track and large tyre/wheel combinations for off-road use.
The short front overhang, the long rear overhang and two long lines stretching along the side amplify the focus placed on driving dynamics, says Mercedes.
The rear of the concept car sports the hallmark chromed SUV trim at the lower edge and as a distinctive feature, a continuous LED light strip in a slim chrome surround on the tailgate.
Mercedes enthusiasts would be keen to know that the X-Class will share a lot of interior bits with the C-Class and the V-Class, thanks to the modular strategy.
Drivetrain wise, there will be a V6 diesel and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. The later will combine an electronic traction system, a transfer case with reduction gear, and two differential locks.
Mercedes has made it official that the X-Class will first launch in Europe in late 2017. The pickup will be manufactured in cooperation with the Renault-Nissan alliance. Production at the Nissan plant in Barcelona will start in 2017. In addition, the X-Class will also be manufactured at Renault’s plant in Argentina, starting in 2018.
