Recent Mercedes-Benz car unveilings seem to follow a pattern. Initial spy shots which are then followed by teaser videos that leads to the company releasing a set of official images before the official launch. The S-Class followed this pattern and so does the new GLA-Class. The German automaker had unveiled the concept car at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. It eventually released a few sketches of the vehicle of the production spec car and was expected to launch it at Frankfurt but thanks to the leak, has now released the official images.
The GLA shares its platform with the A-Class and CLA-Class, and right from the start, the car was meant to resemble the A-Class in more ways than one; and so it does. The headlights, the C-pillar, the front fenders and the overall interiors look like it has been adopted from the pages of the A-Class design book.
But the car can by no means be mistaken for a sheep in a wolf’s skin. The car is an all-out crossover with a longer yet well planted stance. The beefed up curves clubbed with SUV-like front and rear bumpers give the car adds to its credibility.
The first variant on offer from the GLA range will be powered a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine that makes 210PS power and 350Nm torque. Power transmission will be carried out by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and will drive and will drive all four wheels thanks to the company’s 4Matic system. 0-100kph drag race is expected to be covered in less than 6.5 seconds which is more than what one needs for a frequent visit to the supermarket. For the Indian market what will make more sense is the180CDI that will be powered by the same 2.2-litre oil burner that powers the A and the B-Class.
Expected to hit markets by 2014, the GLA-Class will lock horns with its German comrades in the form of the X1 and the Q3. From the entry-level A-Class to the super luxury S-Class and everything in between, the aggressive strategy taken my Mercedes-Benz is very evident and the GLA-Class is going to be no different.
