The Manesar facility of the country’s largest car maker may see a prolonged lockout after Wednesday’s riots, which left one dead and many injured. Police want to detain all 3,000 workers from the Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant and a special investigation team is combing the villages around the facility, where majority of the workforce stays.
Apart from loss of life, the fire during incident has also burned down a part of the assembly line that produces the popular hatchback the Swift. About 100 people were injured on Wednesday including two Japanese executives. There are also reports that thousands have fled from nearby villages overnight, due to fear of police crackdown.
The dispatch division at the Manesar facility has been reopened – to ship the cars that were produced before Wednesday evening. There is no confirmation as to when the production will restart or the exact scale of the damage.
There are also rumours that the state government officials of Haryana are also considering a lockout at the facility.
