Maruti Suzuki has launched a limited edition of its three decade old people carrier, the Omni. The longest running solider in the MSIL stable, the Omni was launched a year after the M800 in 1984 and since then has carted just about anything one can think of across the length and breadth of the country.
This special edition Omni gets many features that we take for granted on newer vehicles and this list includes floor mats, a left side ORVM, new seat covers and a CD player (AUX input included) with four speakers.
The Omni is powered by a 796cc petrol engine which produces 37bhp and 62Nm of torque. This is the same output produced by engine that powered the original M800. The power is transmitted to the rear-wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox.
What the Omni lacks in safety (almost negligible front crumple zone) and grunt, it makes up in versatility (five variants), space and price (Rs 2.5 lakh). It now survives due to its patronage in the commercial sector and the fact that it has no real competition in the market.
