The Mahindra Xylo Mini has been spotted several times in the last few months; we know that this is a five-seater MUV that will compete on price with the Renault Duster and the Ford EcoSport. The all new vehicle looks similar to the Xylo MUV and is hence been addressed as Mini Xylo. However, Mahindra has not confirmed the name as yet and there is a possibility that it might get a new name at the time of the launch. But the maximum suspense has been about the engine that will power the new car – there were speculations that the 1.5-litre K9K from the Verito will do the duty, but few others indicated that a new 3-cylinder engine might be built for the rear-wheel-drive model.
Our friends at TeamBhp have now managed to get hold of a document that provides some clarity on the possible configuration of the new mill that might probably power the Xylo Mini. The spec sheet compares the MDICRDe to a new engine, which is apparently 3-cylinder version of the Mahindra’s 2.2-litre mEagle. The displacement is just under 1.5-litres and the power rating is about 100bhp and 280Nm of torque, with max revs of 4,750RPM – quite high for a 3-cylinder diesel engine. The unit is also light (185kgs) and compact, providing Mahindra more opportunity to play around for extra space in the passenger cabin.
The engine ’on paper’ looks promising and might be used in variety of Mahindra models. If brought to production, this can replace the M2DI engine in the base Scorpio and Bolero models, and also power the new Verito Compact Sedan that is due in December. The displacement of less that 1.5-litre means that it can be used in hatchbacks, incase Mahindra decides to go down that road in future.
We think that the Mahindra Xylo Mini will be launched by September, but since the company has been quoted saying ‘all new five-seater SUV’ before, we think it will be renamed at the time of the launch.
