Mahindra developing driverless cars

Mahindra Group is taking its automotive dream a step ahead and is developing a driverless car. And honestly, this is not very surprising because it’s the same company who played a very important role in developing the electric car market in India.

Mahindra Reva has submitted few technical and design concepts for driverless cars in Singapore and UK. The Bangalore-based company said that it will at least take three to four years to develop a production model, after starting trials. Once the prototype is ready, road testing will take place in UK and Singapore and not in India, because Indian roads are too crowded to test driverless cars. For now, the company’s target market is US, Europe and some South-Eastern countries. 

Mahindra Reva has already begun working on this project at their research and development facility in Bengaluru. The software for this car is being co-developed with Tech Mahindra. 

"We have already begun experiments in our R&D facility in Bengaluru. Once we get approvals from the respective governments, we'll start testing these cars on road," said an executive to ET.

It is really good to see an Indian automotive company taking on giants like Google, who has been working on such projects for years. First with the electric vehicles and now with driverless cars, it shows Mahindra’s effort to advance in motoring technology.
