Hindustan Motors has given its longest serving soldier, the Ambassador another chance to go up against its more modern rivals by fitting it with BS4 compatible engines. The car had been discontinued in all the major metros since April 2010 when the BS4 emission norms came in place. Along with the upgraded engines, HM has also included some new features for the interiors.
The entire 1.8-litre range in the Kolkata based manufacturers line up has been made BS4 compatible. It is available with petrol, LPG and a CNG compatible engine. While the petrol version has an output of 73PS and 134Nm of torque, the LPG spec mill produces 67PS and 129Nm of torque and the CNG engine, the lowest of the lot, produces 57PS and 115Nm of torque. This engine is still available in BS3 configuration along with the 1.5-litre diesel and the 2.0-litre diesel. All three BS4 variant have been mated to a five-speed manual.
Some of the newer features being offered with these variants include, (optional) power steering), MP3 compatible music system, mobile phone charger, moulded door pads, beige coloured fabrics with rear arm rest, digital trip metre and a power window (note the singularity in the offering).
While the brochures are out, HM have not made any official announcements on when the car will be launched and for that matter price of the newer variants. We will bring you all the details when HM updates us.
