Delhi government has announced the return of the odd-even rule, now slated to be implemented from April 15 to 30. The road rationing scheme will allow vehicles with odd and even registration numbers to ply on respective dates.
The odd-even rule had first been implemented over the first two weeks of 2016 to reign in pollution levels largely attributed to vehicular pollution. The data recorded during the experiment had turned out to be inconclusive, mostly due to varying weather conditions affecting the study parameters.
The government claims that 81 per cent of the people of Delhi are in favour of the odd-even rule owing to the significant traffic decongestion. While motorcycles continue to be exempted from the rule, the other categories will be revised before implementation of the rule.
The government also says that employing magistrates to enforce the rule resulted in judicial work getting affected. The Delhi government now plans to rope in retired Army personnel for law enforcement to ensure Delhiites abide by the proposed rule.
