2018 New York Motor Show: Lincoln Aviator returns as mid-size luxury SUV

Lincoln Aviator was a mid-size luxury SUV sold between 2003 to 2005. Now the American carmaker has decided to revive the moniker by showcasing the Aviator Concept, which looks like a downsized Navigator, at the 2018 New York Motor Show.

Although Lincoln claims that it is a preview to its newest product, we know that it is a production ready SUV which will take on the likes of the Ford Explorer, Chevy Traverse, Honda Pilot and the Dodge Durango. The three-row SUV showcased at the NY stage has a plug-in hybrid powertrain, making it the first time that the American carmaker will offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain mated to a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. This powertrain in the new Aviator promises Lincoln’s quietest, smoothest and the most powerful drive yet.

As it is a Lincoln, the new Aviator Concept is not only feature-laden but also luxurious. There is Ford’s new Co-Pilot360 driver assist and safety systems along with an advanced adaptive suspension system called the Suspension Preview Technology. The all-digital 12-inch instrument cluster is combined with a large floating infotainment screen. There are opulent materials seen inside the cabin which is minimalistic yet very luxurious.

The Dearborn-based carmaker will reveal more details of the revived Aviator in the months to come. Considering the methods adopted by Lincoln in the past for the Navigator, the new Aviator will be revealed with little to no changes to the mid-size SUV showcased at the New York. Expect the reborn Aviator to go on sale sometime next year.
