2015 LA Auto Show: Hyundai unveils new US-spec Elantra

Hyundai has taken the covers off the all-new generation of the US-spec Elantra at the ongoing 2015 LA Auto Show. This new model is currently available only in South Korea where it’s being sold as the Avante. Hyundai will eventually launch the new Elantra in other markets including India by mid-2016.

The US-spec Elantra doesn’t look too different when compared to the Avante. The only visible difference is the massive chrome grille and LED daytime running lights integrated into the front bumper. Overall, the new Elantra is a result of Hyundai’s new design language instead of the brand’s traditional Fluidic design theme. As a result, this new model mimics the bigger Genesis with its large hexagonal grille, sweptback headlights and C-shaped fog lamp housing. In profile, however, the only new additions are the different alloy wheels, wing mirrors and a new side crease that now runs above the door handles. At the rear, the tail lamps appear new and are noticeably slimmer than before while the boot lid is new as well.  

The US-spec Elantra gets a new 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 128bhp and 211Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Hyundai will also be offering a naturally aspirated 2-litre motor delivering 147bhp and 179Nm of torque. The bigger 2-litre motor will offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

Now that it’s being unveiled for the US markets, the new Hyundai Elantra will be launched in other markets including India by mid-2016.
