Designed to replace the 1 Series coupe, BMW’s most watched product the 2014 2 Series coupe was officially revealed today. This is after spy shots and other specifications of the series managed to be leaked online few days before its launch. The car will go on sales in Germany from March.
This rear-wheel-drive coupe adopts BMW’s new naming system and completes the automaker’s badge reorganisation by which all coupe and convertibles get even numbers and the sedans and wagons bear odd numbers.
An extended range of 2 Series coupe models have been planned from the outset, including the 220i as well as the 218d, 220d and 225d – the latter three powered by turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines. Joining them will be the range-topping M235i coupe developed by BMW’s M division.
One can expect the 228i will be priced from USD 33,025 (Rs 20.38 lakh) while the M235i will retail for USD 44,025 (Rs 27. 19 lakh).

At first glance one can make out that it is larger and more luxurious than the 1 Series coupe and it promises to be a lot more sporty. The 2 Series has a wheelbase that has been stretched by 30mm, providing a more accommodating cabin which gives ample head and legroom and a bigger boot. Yet the weight, BMW says, remains identical to the 1 Series. The interior largely resembles the second-generation 1 Series hatchback, including the dashboard, front seats and switchgear. However, some of the unique trim elements make the difference pronounced.
The new appeal comes from the combination of traditional elements and contemporary touches that get it the good looking car tag. Buyers will be able to choose between four lines: SE, Sport, Modern and M Sport-the latter adds an aerodynamic body kit, a revised grille and a chrome exhaust finisher. There's also a sport-tuned suspension (which reduces the ride height) and 17-inch M light alloy wheels.
BMW claims the new 2 Series will offer the most extensive range of driver assistance systems in the compact segment, with options including high beam assistant, cruise control with braking function and speed limit info display, lane departure and collision warning systems and a rear-view camera.
The 2 Series’ infotainment system features internet-based services with integrated applications, allowing access to real-time traffic information, internet radio, and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
A six-speed manual transmission is standard on all but the 225d. An eight-speed automatic is the standard self-shifting gearbox. All models are also available with an eight-speed sports automatic, which offers faster gear changes, and features launch control and Eco Pro mode with coasting function.
While we cannot expect the range-topping M235i coupe here, India may get the petrol version by next year.
