I was looking for a MUV/SUV and test drove Scorpio Vlx, and the Innova. I had always dreamt of owning a scorpio from the time it was launched but could not afford it at that time. When we test drove the Innova we were pleased with the interiors and the space inside the vehicle and the overall refinement. But like I said earlier, I always wanted to buy the Scorpio and hence headed towards the nearest Mahindra showroom. My heart changed once I saw the new Scorpio. I just could not but appreciate the beast.
Exteriors: The looks of the Scorpio still stings in one's mind. Its tall stance makes you feel like a king of the road. The headlamps cluster and the tail lamp cluster look well carved out. However the stickering in the Vlx version makes it look like a chessboard (the only difference between the looks of Crde/SLE versions and Mhawk apart from badging). The looks are however subjective to individuals and hence my personal rating on a scale of 5 would be 4 .
Interiors: Overall you would not be happy with the interiors of this SUV. The fit and finish is just not there. The finish in the center and gearlever and other switches look cheap and feel cheap too. There are storage spaces all over but still you cannot store a book etc., The front door map pocket cannot be used until you open the door. The fabric on the seats is still not of great quality considering you are spending close to Rs.12 Lakhs. I had hoped that Mahindra would give leather seats and a better finish. The Steering mounted controls are good and tilt steering is very difficult to operate. The rattling of the seats would annoy anyone since it is bound to be present once you have done about a few thousand kilometers. The seats are very comfortable though for long rides. I had travelled about 600 kms in a stretch with a couple of breaks and was not feeling too tired. Overall Rating 3.
Performance : Switch on the engine, you would immediately know the difference in refinement of the new mHawk engine and once you drive it you would forget about the fit and finish. It is really a bomb to drive. There is no lag in power afterall it is 120 BHP engine and the engine just screams to be unleashed. Though the body roll is still evident but the braking has improved thanks to the ABS. Overall the handling is much better than the old scorpio (crde included) . The steering feels a little more connected you however still dont get the confidence to test the corners at high speeds. I had hoped that Mahindra could work on the body roll of the car. The suspension is improved and the ride is more comfortable now. I found that the gearshit was a bit hard especially on a cold start as well as shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and it really needed some effort for changing. The middle row had some space now (on a 7 seater) as it was placed right back, though not as comfortable as a Tata Safari. The seats are very comfortable though. I had recently travelled more than 600 kms in a day (with a couple of short breaks) and I did not feel that tired. The brakes have improved though would require a few.
Other : The milage or economy is claimed to be 12 Kmpl in city (though I doubt it) and there are nuemerous gizmos offered for this variant. The tyretronics, steering mounted audio controls, cruise controls, intelligent wipers are quite good but there are no Airbags (surprising when you consider the cost you are paying). The reversing of this large SUV is made simple with the smart parking camera which animates the scene behind the scorpio in the parking mirror and alerts you with a beep when you are close to the object. These are good features but the Mahindra would have a lower end versions. Driving this SUV in the city is a delight for its light steering and other traffic would make way and respect you. The follow me home headlamps are good and Overall you would not be disappointed if you are driving. The last seats are best avoided in case of long journeys. Moreover, the fit and finish gets you sometimes when you compare with any other sedan given the rattling of the seats as well as the NVH.
Overall : Lot of features including cruise control but sadly Air Bags is missing. The Scorpio just got a change of heart and improved handling. If only it had other variants it would have been a real value for money. I had hoped that there would be EBD as well as climate control. The Knobs are of poor finish and the cost savings / cutting is evident. It actually makes you feel like a king though your mind would say it it a touch expensive. Given that there are a very few choices at that price range, I would still call it a best buy. The service is a pain though which sadly needs to improve than just washing the car. Lights are very poor and range is bad.
Have done about 25,000 kms and the following is my update
1. Handling is much improved and with the power you have it feels like a breeze
2. Initial pickup is something which is lagging
3. Milage is only around 10 kms per liter
4. Seats and doors rattle every now and then which can be fixed with spanners. Do it yourself type
5. Lights are not at all good in case of night driving on narrow roads.
6. Quality of the wipers when used in heavy rains is pathetic
Well It has been a long time since I gave an update. I would like to share my experience with me completing around 26K Kms which includes city driving as well as highway.
The SUV is vastly improved in handling over the earlier versions. I was impressed by the improvement is the stability as well as the braking though it is still not top notch and high speeds may scare you with it bumpy ride. The issues start after you complete say about 20K Kms and I was not exception. The alternator failed, mileage dropped to below 10 and the worst part the service is pathetic. The seats and other parts started to rattle again and again and I was highly disappointed with this. The Service PErsonnel hardly care about customer satisfaction and do a shoddy job. Even writing to customer care did not yeild the desired results.
It has been around 4 years since I have the Scorpio. Overall the machine is quite good however, some hitches in terms of rattling noises and electrical issues continue to irritate you. Touch wood, there has been no major spend on repairs. Milage is still around 10 Kmpl in the city and around 12-13 on the highway. Barking and bodyroll tends to be an issue on the highways.
Great Power, Light Steering for City Traffic, Upright Seats,Very Bad Leg Space - very less space, Still unstable at high Speeds, Overall Fit Finish not good

I have own a Mahindra Scorpio 2.6 SLX CRDe 2007. I test drove Innova, Safari, Tuscon and Scorpio before deciding to buy this vehicle. I am satisfied with the Value for money i got.
The handling of the car is surprising good. The steering is very responsive. Pickup is surprising for a first time SUV driver. The VAS with reminders about handbrake, reserve fuel, seatbelts etc is really good. Follow me home headlights, footboard lights and in cabin lighting are some features that are good. Vehicle Handling is better than Safari, Sumo and equivalent.
I get 13.50 KMpl fuel economy in city driving. I have obtained 14.50 to 15 Kmpl on highways. This is good considering a 2.5L engine and power that you get with it. The controls are excellent and handy. AC is never a problem.
The seats are little stiff and not true submarine. seats need improvements. The car is bumpy on uneven roads even with the new 5 link rear suspension though smoother than the old version.
A seven seater with Aisle type 2-2-3 seating will do a world of good to the scorpio. The rattling in the middle row is a problem.
What with the bull bars fitted, The traffic does not dare to come close to my car.
I have sold my Scorpio Last month. Good resale value too. No regrets owing a scorpio. I now own a Xylo.

I own the Scorpio LX now- just took delivery a week ago.
The engine is first class. It hisses to a start with no fuss. Very powerful and no turbo lag troubles. Smooth and quite silent (atleast once the windows are up and the AC on.)
Just remember that the instrument cluster is a little different in the sense that the fuel gauge is the upper right side one - it is easy to mistake the engine temp gauge for fuel gauge at first glance because of its location. And the hand brake indicator is right below, so please watch out before you take off after starting up the car because it is quite possible to take off with the handbrake on by mistake.
The gearing is sporty and clicky. I love it. Fantastic short and tight gearing feel which makes you want to Drive and Drive and Drive.
This is a "seat-of-the-pants driver's car all the way.
The superb Turbo 2.6 Crde beneath the hood is a huge advantage!. Good Torque, Great Power (BHP).
Hard/ Comfy driver seat. Very Snug feel and since I bought the LX and am quite a big built person I dont feel anything lacking because the front seats dont have armrests!
This car is a bit tall so one mustn't try sports car stunts while driving around corners and hill roads but the power is a pleasure.
I drove on a bad rutted road at a pretty high speed and didnt feel much discomfort. I sat in the back when my good friend drove and didnt feel a thing. The rear suspension is quite excellent. This car feels much better when fully loaded with people and luggage though.
Ive fitted 5 beautiful 5 spoke alloy wheels and these improve the ride and handling fantastically because the stance of the jeep has been widened - because the AURA Alloys are 6.5 inches wide as opposed to the 5.5 to 6 inches wide standard scorpio steel wheels.
And with the addition of a decent music system with a relatively inexpensive STEERING MOUNTED REMOTE, I now pretty much have many of the extra features of the DX, SLX and even VLX - all at a mere fraction of the cost of those vehicles!!
Im a firm believer in accessorizing the vehicle according to one's own taste by buying the base version and adding things to it in the way one prefers personally and the savings made and value I have created by doing this, affirms my belief again.
I love the amazing space at the back with the seat folded up and the HUGE space available with the seat folded down.
Feels nice and compact and sporty. Good fun to drive. Tough Mahindra Genes everywhere. This is not a Luxury SUV but an utility plus luxurious one.
The LX gives good value with Power Steering (nice chunky wheel and tiltable too!) Good powerful motors running the front and rear power windows. Solid AC and Heater!
235 Tyres are good but I think this may have been even better with 245 size on the big 16 inch rims.
While the Safari LX , its natural rival may offer many many toys and things and features etc, somehow, when you buy a car with your heart and "seat-of-the-pants", you end up buying a Scorpio.
I am waiting for the first few HILL DRIVES in this jeep. Im sure it will be a 100% FUN!
However, because of its tall stance and because it is an SUV, not a Sports Car, I will not recommend using it like you would, a low slung sports car, chucking it around bends etc. If you drive it well, and like a jeep type vehicle should be driven, it is probably the best vehicle to buy in this kind of budget!
Great Value and a LOVELY CAR!
Thank you Mahindra for getting things so right in the Scorpio!

The environment friendly car technology in India has so far been restricted to small vehicles like the Reva or the Honda Civic Hybrid. But it hs finally moved down to SUV's with Mahindra Scorpio.
The Scorpio has been around for almost a decade now, and ideally speaking it should be due for a retirement anytime soon. But Mahindra has been constantly working on the Scorpio. The latest evolution is the VLX Micro Hybrid. It looks like a normal Scorpio but there has been little styling changes. Crucially, it has now got the Start-Stop Technology. The Scorpio Micro Hybrid is not a conventional hybrid car. Unlike a Honda Civic Hybrid, the scorpio does not get an electric motor to back up the petrol or diesel engine. Instead, what you get in Micro Hybrid is Start-Stop. When you stop, put the gear into neutral and let go of the clutch, the engine cuts off after 5 seconds. That is it, you are saving fuel and saving the environment. When you have to get moving again, simply press the clutch and the engine revs up to life instantly.
It does save fuel, and around the world start-stop is used in a lot of city cars to save fuel in city traffic conditions. When the engine cuts off, the air-conditioning also cuts off. In the sweltering Indian heat, it is unsure how many people would actually let the engine cut off. If you are willing to overlook the perspiration, this system does make a difference. The Start-stop when put to test returned mileage figures of 10.09 kmpl with the system turned on and 9.82 kmpl with the system turned off. It is not a significant increase, but every little bit of fuel saved will help in the end.
In scorpio, the Micro Hybrid Technology is allied to the 2.2 litre mHawk engine which impressed us all when it was launched last year. The all aluminum engine is 130 kgs lighter than its predecessor and the resulting difference in dynamics is altogether apparent. The Scorpio was once a very heavy ride. But things have improved a lot and the recent switch from leaf springs to coil springs has made a lot of difference. The ride is more composed, the Handling is decent and though it tends to roll and wallow a bit, it is quite within acceptable parameters.
I once put on 10000 kms on Scorpio driving around in Rajasthan, and I enjoyed every single Km of it. Now with its improved engine, performance has gone up, fuel efficiency has gone up, it is more refined and crucially, because there is less weight upfront, handling is also better. Overall it has become a much safer and nicer drive.
Micro Hybrid Technology costs and additional Rs.3000. Not a big hit on your wallet given the benefits of saving the environment and saving money in the long run.
The Scorpio might be old but Mahindra’s constant tinkering with the car has managed to keep it fresh and relevant in this day and age. It still looks very manly and very SUV like. Scorpio is also the rare SUV in which you get Automatic Transmission. You can also get optional 4WD in this car. You get captain seats at the rear which makes it a comfortable long distance tourer. It suits many needs and many requirements. Clearly Scorpio is a cut above its competition right now.

Hi,
I am a scorpio owner and i have to say that i am totally and completely satisfied with this product. This car which comes in the SUV section in the Indian market has great potential in it and has satisfied me to the core. The scorpio has a great turning radius which outclasses the innova, safari, and other such car in this category. The body is strong and not delicate and is a much more reliable car than many others available in the Indian market today.
Coming to the fuel consumptionm part, i have to say that it gives u a better mileage seeing the conditions of the roads today here in India. The Scorpio has a great engine and so a good pick up. The run it has on highways is also tremendous. In terms of other vechicles as far as the speed part is concerned these vechicles have a weak link, that is when they touch a speed of more than 120 Km/ph they tend to shake or vibrate a lot which is not the case here with the Scorpio. With a Scorpio when driving in a highway and in times of overtaking, you dont have to think twice to do that mannouvre as it takes on the road in a smooth and efficient way unlike the innova which is a bulky car and the driver faces difficulties in doing such mannouvres.
When in times of an accident (major or minor) the Scorpio tends to have a lot of safety measures plus it has a strong body unlike innova and tavera which even with a small hit gives an impression of a huge damage to the car’s outer body as its very delicate, but for Scorpio that is not the case and i have also experienced the way the service stations act in times of servicing your car and they are really helpful and fast and they are not like the other service stations which sometimes mistreat their customers by wasting their precious time and money.
The price of a Scorpio is also reasonable comparing the same with an innova or tavera as the Scorpio gives you a better performance meter reading than the others and these cars also cost a lot as compared to a scorpio. Mahindra is following one important rule in customer saticfaction by giving them good treatment and also by leading them in the right way.

Just got delivery of a new 4 X 4 automatic and love the car already. Raring to take it to the wilderness. I used to drive one 2 years back ( CRDE) and am impressed with the improvements. I was scouting for a SUV and looked at skoda yeti , safari , mitusbishi outlander , toyota fortuner. I have driven many such vehicles in the west and its wasn't hard to decide on scorpio. Most foreign brands look good and feel good but you pay through the nose for extra features. They are just taking Indians for a (long) ride !! Its all rosy till the car gets into maintenance mode. scorpio has everything you need to drive comfortably and much more. Put your money in the bank and let the interest pay for the fuel.
Exterior Looks nice . not to many colours to choose from in vlx auto . White , brown and black. Imagine taking a white car off road ..but then thats what i had to settle for.
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) I am over six foot tall and am comfortable in front seat. nice tilt steering, controls on steering. bluetooth. Was surprised to see music system with sd card and usb. not provided by other manufacturers.Who uses cd anyways in this digital age. Basic controls are clear.
One more thing how foreign manufactueres loot indians and dont even think about their convenience. They have turn indicators on left which makes no sense when driving as your left hand still has to be engaged . Figured out they simply move the steering model made for exports, left hand drives. In scorpio the turn indicator on right so you can drive the car with one hand .
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Engine is smooth , smoother than crde . Mhawk is quiet yet powerful . Took it for a spin on motorway and had a thrilling drive. too early to comment on fuel economy . Auto gearbox is smooth.
Final Words Good value for money. Made in India. Made for India.
Areas of improvement Plastics, electric seat adjustment for driver seat would be great.
Power , Automatic transmission , gadgets , driving position , 4X4Plastics could have been slightly better ,
