Introduction
Infotainment systems in today's world have become imperative for car users. All modern cars boast this feature with a lot of new tech. As older cars may not have this feature, a modern touch can be given thanks to the innumerable options available in the aftermarket. Finding a reputable brand might be cumbersome and hence Minda, a trusted OEM supplier for many manufacturers, has brought in some infotainment systems under the brand name WTunes.
What is it?
The Uno Minda WTunes-400 player is an after-market infotainment system with a touchscreen display that can be fitted into any car. It's an Android-based system available in nine- and ten-inch screens with little to no difference in the user interface and operating system.
What is in the box?
The nicely packaged carton has a foam-type material to hold the display securely without damaging it. There are connectors including a power cable, audio connectors, camera inputs, two USB cables, a mic, and an antenna. However, a camera or cameras for 360 view compatibility and the frame to install the system are not available in the box. Those need to be purchased separately.
How to install it?
Even if this is a plug-and-play device, some professional help is needed to install it. No wires need to be cut as the proper cable connectors have been provided. However, a frame of the right size and fit needs to be sourced first, either through Amazon or offline sellers. We preferred the latter as they have the exact knowledge of which car model (including year) will require which frame that will sit flush without any additional holes, clamps, or protrusions.
How does it work?
The infotainment system works on Android and gets a default screen with a user interface that can be customised through the settings. With 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, it boasts onboard storage for music, videos, and pictures as well. Apart from the other nifty features, the most important is the wireless Android Auto and CarPlay connectivity which most users will be using. Connect it once and it will automatically connect every time you start the car. This process is seamless and the latest Android update provides split-screen functionality. As a result, music apps like Spotify, JioSaavn, Gaana, and others can run simultaneously along with navigation.
Another USP is that a reverse camera or even 360 view cameras can be paired with in-built support for high-definition cameras. It doesn't provide dynamic guidelines but fixed ones for the reversing camera. Nevertheless, this connection pairs perfectly with the steering-mounted controls and even cleverly dims the system's brightness when the car's headlamps are switched on. Similarly, the volume is lowered while reversing. Thanks to the GPS antenna, it even manages to show the car's speed in one of the default themes while having the versatility to customise these themes. Moreover, it has support for WiFi so that users can set up hotspots and provide a separate internet connection. And since it works on Android, one can configure the system according to one's needs with plenty of options available online for download.
Conclusion
This WTunes player is a good product that caters to all the primary infotainment needs and also provides many new-age features. And it being a product from Minda, it is needless to say it has pan-India after-sales support. Besides, the HD screen with subtle colours is pleasing to the eye. Then, it gets a T5 processor which does an effective job with a responsive screen and quick interface. Even the audio quality is good. And thanks to the 12-band equaliser with multiple presets, an audiophile can further pair it with an amplifier and sub-woofer to further enhance it. Don't go by its MRP of Rs. 34,990 as it retails for a slightly lower price with dealers and online discounts. However, it remains one of the premium offerings, and rightly so. No other branded players offer seamless wireless compatibility on big screens like this and at this price point. Moreover, new-age features support is a bonus.
