Introduction
The Hyundai Elantra is the South-Korean automaker’s answer to the question, “How good and comfortable can a Hyundai get, if price does not feature high on the priority list?". Their contender in the D-segment, the Elantra has been on sale in India for almost four years now but still feels quite contemporary (in most cases) even today. It underwent a facelift earlier this year and now gets a significant number of updates.
Why I’d buy it?
It’s a large, comfortable and well-endowed car (excuse the pun). The cabin is spacious and filled with a ton of comfort features like climate control, music system with LCD display, electric adjustment for the driver’s seat and light adjustment for the instrument cluster. One of our personal favourites is the ventilated front seats which basically channel hot/cold air through perforations in the leather. In a country where heat and humidity are only secondary to its population, such a feature is sure to be a blessing.
We also love the fact that it is very comfortable to drive and is surprisingly fuel efficient despite a small engine and output for such a large car.
Why I’d avoid it?
This latest update for the Elantra saw Hyundai change the interior from brown and black to a full black. This in combination with the relatively rear small windows and the swoopy roof tend to induce a bit of claustrophobia despite the cabin being so huge. The cabin may be feature loaded but it is now looking a bit dated as compared to its rivals.
My favourite version
We would recommend the top-spec SX diesel AT. The diesel manual variants have been known to have heavy clutches and a ton of turbo lag making for a rather cumbersome driving experience. This one (the AT) does the job of making the drive easy as well keeping fuel efficiency quite well.
