Hyundai i30 unveiled at Geneva Motor Show

While big popular auto shows like Geneva Motor Show keeps the showgoers on their toes, some carmakers are equally busy unveiling all of their models. Hyundai is one of them and well they have also unveiled the updated i30 at the 85th Geneva Motor Show.

The revised i30 now gets a new hexagonal front grille in accordance with the new design theme of Hyundai. It is now offered in new paint shades,  gets new Daytime Running Lights (DRL), reprofiled headlights, tail lamps, and new alloy wheels.

The new 1.6-litre, turbocharged engine (T-GDI) is a welcome addition to the powertrain family of the car. The new engine belts out 180bhp that’s close to 40 more than the current naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol. This engine is available with only a six-speed manual gearbox and does 0-100kmph in 8 seconds. While, Hyundai does offer a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox it is offered only with the 1.6-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol (GDI) engines. Now that could be a disadvantage as the VW Golf, its rival, is available with a DSG auto box. Body kit, dual exhausts and sporty 18-inch alloys differentiate the go-faster i30 from its lesser powerful variants.

The i30 might be as meaningless as selling ice-cream to an Eskimo, while we want such cars, there is no clear research to prove these cars will sell. VW has been toying with the idea of introducing the Golf in India, but it seems unlikely at least in the next five years. Until then let’s light a candle with a hope that these powerful hatchbacks are introduced soon.
